How to guides

How to hang wallpaper in difficult places

How to hang wallpaper in difficult places

You'll probably have started hanging your wallpaper on a straight wall without any obstacles. Sadly though, there's no way you can paper all the way around a room without meeting corners, door frames and fittings like light switches and sockets. But if you know the right techniques, you can still get a neat result and we will show you how.

Buying guides

Buyer's guide to wallpapering tools

Buyer's guide to wallpapering tools

Wallpapering can sometimes be a more complex task than you might imagine, but having all the right tools will make it far simpler and the result much neater.

Types of tools

Paste brush

You can use any 100mm or 125mm paintbrush to apply paste, but a paste brush has a thicker wedge of soft bristles, which makes it easier to use.

Paper-hanging scissors

These scissors have extra-long blades that make it easier to cut your wallpaper in straight lines.

Wallpaper table (pasting table)

Higher than a kitchen table and just wider than a roll of wallpaper, this lightweight folding platform is perfect for measuring, cutting and pasting paper. W-leg tables are more stable than cheaper versions, but plastic ones are the sturdiest of all - as well as being the simplest to clean and store.

Plumb line/chalk line

Want to make sure you hang your wallpaper straight? Use a plumb line (a weight on the end of a string) to get a perfectly straight vertical line. And if you need to draw a straight edge on most surfaces, snap a chalk line.

Wallpaper scorer

When you soak wallpaper to prepare it for stripping, score the surface first with a rotary scorer as it helps the water to penetrate. Then just use a scraper to lift the paper off the wall.

Paper-hanging brush

The soft bristles on this brush are designed to smooth wallpaper by squeezing out any air bubbles and excess paste. Wash the bristles in warm water when you've finished to keep it fresh and usable.

Wallpaper steamer

Steaming is the fastest way to strip wallpaper. It makes good sense to buy a steamer when you have a lot of paper to strip, or need to do the job quickly.

Seam roller

Smooth the seams between lengths of wallpaper with this tiny roller - but make sure not to use it on embossed or fragile papers.

Combination smoother/cutter

After you've smoothed your wallpaper in place, simply cut around any obstructions with the retractable snap-off blade. But don't press too hard on fragile papers, or they might tear.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This wallpaper is fab! We bought this wallpaper years ago and were very pleased with it. It looked amazing on our chimney breastfeeding and it was easy enough to put up. Our 3 year old even helped us. It was so nice that when we had our fire fitted we wanted the same wallpaper. We were very very pleased that after 5 years B&Q still sold it. It looks as good as it did before and we always get compliments about it. I am extremely surprised that it has had so many bad reviews. I love it so much I would recommend it to everyone to the extent that I am looking for somewhere else to put this wallpaper.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Success Further to previous adverse comments on this wallpaper. I was worried about these reports as I had already purchased the paper. I took advice from the manufacturers web site and my decorator followed them correctly. The result is a perfect finish and it looks lovely. I think the problem is that the reddy mix adhesive is the clue to the papers successfully hanging and that this should be emphasised on the label giving instructions.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Looks great I read the reviews after i had already brought the paper so i was a little worried i'd made the wrong choice! However, after a couple of hours i now have a lovely feature wall and there is no sign of the paper shrinking to reveal gaps between the drops. I'm going to use this paper on the chimney breast next. Not sure if the paper has been updated since some of the reviews on here as some are quite old but following the instructions it went up fine. Leave paste to soak for a good 10 mins and make sure the room isn't too hot so the paper doesn't dry out too quickly! One thing to note however is that the face of the paper is quite delicate and can easily be scuffed/ripped so a careful touch is needed with this paper.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from I wish I had read the reviews!! And here I was thinking I am rubbish at wallpapering!! Didn't think to look at reviews, as at £18 a roll I thought I was getting a good quality wallpaper. It looks nice up but it's taken me 2 days to hang 3 rolls of it. I accidentally lent on a piece and some wallpaper came away on my hand! Done that a couple of times, so down it came and started again, I found it hard to cut edges etc, but just thought it was me. It tears very easily too, others have mentioned gaps appearing but I have only just finished so it's ok at moment, I'm now dreading when it completely dries.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Do not waste money on buying this paper Bought 3 rolls of this paper to make a feature of chimney breast wall. We realise we should have read reviews before we wasted our money. Thinking we were getting a good quality paper as it was quite expensive it was the worst paper my husband has had to hang. The paper tore at the sides as soon as you touched it, difficult to hang because of this and also difficult to match. Did not dry properly we ended up having to take it all off. What a complete waste of time and expense. DEFINATELY would not recommend anyone buying this. I am surprised B&Q still stock this after reading the reviews.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Awful - Don't waste you're money We bought 3 rolls of this paper, to use as a featured wall. The paper is awful and kept easily tearing. Even when we managed to get a length of paper up, and brushed it down carefully with a damp cloth, just to get rid of air bubbles. It still kept tearing. We gave up after just trying to put up 3 lengths and had to tear it down. I am bitterly disappointed because I am sure it would look nice . But it's not good quality and not worth £18 quid a roll.
