How to build a basic, ground-level deck

A simple deck at ground level is a straightforward project – a perfect starting point if you're new to carpentry.

Before you start laying, check out our guide to planning your decking project. This covers everything from decking structures to board designs, and offers an essential introduction.

Read How to plan your decking

Our example is of decking that is:

  • Laid on flat, soft and level ground
  • Laid on the ground floor, not raised
  • Not joined to a building
  • Without any extra touches like a balustrade or decking lights
  • Designed with the boards in a horizontal pattern

If you plan to lay decking that's raised, adjacent to a building or wall, or would like to add a balustrade, head over to our article on laying a raised deck for more information.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Handy size deck tile Great pressure treated tile which was easy to put down in my shed for an instant floor, because of the size there was very little waste and hardly any cutting.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great value I've just got these home, all good quality. and only £2 not £2.98 as advertised. I'm covering a concrete area decking would have cost around £700 done this although not finished yet for £220. Serious value for money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic bargain...dont listen to everyone else.. These tiles being so much cheaper than comparable products or other decking, i was all up for purchasing them until i read the reviews, and decided to steer clear. Then the fact it would cost me three times the amount to do with other products i decided to take a look in store, and i have no idea what other people's issues are !!! To do with this product would have cost me £120 compared with 200 for decking boards and underframe, plus the weekend i went they were actually priced at £2 each meaning i decked a good sized area for £80. £80 vs £200 plus..... If i am critical, yes some boards were greenish. Its not mould, its a preservative put on the knots in the boards, and you only have to pick the blemish free ones, its not rocket science. I never saw any damaged boards, but again, inspect them when you buy and its no issue. Softwood wont last as long as hardwood, and if you want a top notch product then look at other options. But for me ( an ex chippie) i was more than satisfied at this cheaper option. And as others have said, the hardest bit is levelling the ground. Spend all your time on this otherwise you will find the boards springing at corners once you start using it. Apart from that its all good.........

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Do the job. Use these tiles to replace old ones of the same size. They do the job nicely, no issues with quality or colour as mentioned by others.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Bargain At only £1.00 a tile what can you say. Does the job its designed for at a bargain price Only downside is that the deck bearers are priced at over £10.00 if they were half the price then B&Q could be onto a winner :-)

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Mediocre quality but the cheapest I could get If you are looking for something that looks really nice, this is not the best choice. They do the job though and they are definitelly cheaper than the larger ones (600x600). I ordered 32, all of them came with some grain strains which I believe is the protective coating and will fade out after being outside. One of the tiles was unnailed, so I will have to return it... If you are placing them directly onto the soil, without a frame, you will need to level it quite well as they are not heavy enough to push the soil down. Place a weed control fabric underneath.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Pushed If you are really pushed for time & money these might be worth considering. I considered that they were tatty, shoddy and poorly made.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Just good enough for kindling. These were cheap - and I knew that but they actually started to fall apart as I took them out of the car - the staples that supposedly hold them together were nearly all bent - I ended up using them as firewood kindling - if I hadn't lost the receipt they would have been taken back - in pieces even before they were used.
