How to build a shed base

How to build a shed base

A firm, level base should be the starting point for any shed or garden building. Without this the structure is likely to be assembled improperly - screw holes will not line up correctly, doors may not fit their doorways and the quality and service life of your shed could be greatly reduced.

There are a number of different options to create the necessary flat and level surface, and we're going to take you through four of them. All are ideal to prevent water collecting around the shed floor and damaging it. These four methods are how to lay:

  • a timber base (also known as a portabase)
  • a plastic base
  • a paved base, and
  • a concrete base

Both paved and concrete bases can't be laid straight onto soft ground and so require a sub-base. A concrete base also has a further extra step - constructing the frame or edging that supports concrete while it sets, this is known as formwork. So do bear in mind that these options can take longer to build than the timber and plastic bases.

Simply choose the one for you and read through the step-by-step advice on how to lay your shed base.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good quality shed. I have had the shed for about 2 weeks now and I am really pleased with the quality. It took me and my son about 4hrs from start to finish and I have to say it looks really well. It has had a lot of heavy rain on it recently and up to now not one sign of a leak. It is the first plastic shed I have owned and only time will tell if its up to the job but for now all is good. The instructions are very good and all of the parts fit well and did not need any adjustment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Shed idea for maintenance free storage. I really wanted a plastic shed to avoid ongoing maintenance with wooden sheds and having read previous reviews I was almost put off as comments said it was very flimsy, exceptionally hard to put together and was a very complex challenge taking hours. As I couldn't find another plastic shed of the right size that I liked I decided to just go for it. Best thing I did, this is an excellent shed and once put together pretty robust (in my opinion), I set a day aside and myself and my girlfriend tackled the build, absolutely no problems and no issues, took 5 hours and only had 2 screws left over! It is a 2 person task to be fair but it does tell you that, we were totally delighted with it, looks great, robust and should be long lasting.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from so lifelike This is just what I wanted. Love it. Only downside is that floor could have been more solid

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent Shed for London Sturdy and material rejects wet UK days. Time to construct is significant, so follow directions. Two people needed on some steps. However, if you are patient, you will be happy with the end product. Be sure to pick a flat spot for final landing position.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from on opening the box there is more piece than you know what to do with and more screws than id seen in my entire life, we have built loads of flat packed stuff so checked the pieces and set off, OMG tricky and requires time and paitiance about 5 to 6 hours, but the general idea is simple and goes together surprisingly well and looks great when finished apears strong and looks neat and tidy and will do the job.
