How to guides

How to hang wallpaper in difficult places

How to hang wallpaper in difficult places

You'll probably have started hanging your wallpaper on a straight wall without any obstacles. Sadly though, there's no way you can paper all the way around a room without meeting corners, door frames and fittings like light switches and sockets. But if you know the right techniques, you can still get a neat result and we will show you how.

Buying guides

Buyer's guide to wallpapering tools

Buyer's guide to wallpapering tools

Wallpapering can sometimes be a more complex task than you might imagine, but having all the right tools will make it far simpler and the result much neater.

intro

Types of tools

Paste brush

You can use any 100mm or 125mm paintbrush to apply paste, but a paste brush has a thicker wedge of soft bristles, which makes it easier to use.

Paper-hanging scissors

These scissors have extra-long blades that make it easier to cut your wallpaper in straight lines.

Wallpaper table (pasting table)

Higher than a kitchen table and just wider than a roll of wallpaper, this lightweight folding platform is perfect for measuring, cutting and pasting paper. W-leg tables are more stable than cheaper versions, but plastic ones are the sturdiest of all - as well as being the simplest to clean and store.

Plumb line/chalk line

Want to make sure you hang your wallpaper straight? Use a plumb line (a weight on the end of a string) to get a perfectly straight vertical line. And if you need to draw a straight edge on most surfaces, snap a chalk line.

Wallpaper scorer

When you soak wallpaper to prepare it for stripping, score the surface first with a rotary scorer as it helps the water to penetrate. Then just use a scraper to lift the paper off the wall.

Paper-hanging brush

The soft bristles on this brush are designed to smooth wallpaper by squeezing out any air bubbles and excess paste. Wash the bristles in warm water when you've finished to keep it fresh and usable.

Wallpaper steamer

Steaming is the fastest way to strip wallpaper. It makes good sense to buy a steamer when you have a lot of paper to strip, or need to do the job quickly.

Seam roller

Smooth the seams between lengths of wallpaper with this tiny roller - but make sure not to use it on embossed or fragile papers.

Combination smoother/cutter

After you've smoothed your wallpaper in place, simply cut around any obstructions with the retractable snap-off blade. But don't press too hard on fragile papers, or they might tear.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful Stunning Finish! For those of you reading the negative reviews about this beautiful Eton wallpaper DONT be put off. Most people complained about not getting the paste on the paper as the colour comes off or that it bubbles. COLOUR DOES COME OFF SLIGHTLY BUT ITS EASILY REMOVED WITH A SPONGE. When I told my decorator about the reviews, the first thing he did was undo a roll and check the instructions on the label. It needs to be pointed out that the instructions advise using a WALLPAPER ADHESIVE in a tub, NOT A PASTE! My other piece of advice after having a room decorated with the Eton stripe paper would be to advise that firstly, it is better to line your walls as plaster imperfections will show through. The paper is fairly thin when adhesive is applied. The finish however, is absolutely stunning! So use a tub of wallpaper adhesive as instructed and line those walls! I'm glad I was not put off and my decorator checked the label on the roll. Go on, go for it! Im so glad I did!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from superb. previous reviews confuse me bought this paper last summer for a feature wall in my bedroom and i must say it looks excellent. found it a pleasure to hang. i went horizontally which meant very long strips to hang. but all in all went up a dream and no bubbles. and i aint the pro like a previous reviewer claimed to be and found trouble hanging smoothly.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Do not buy! I thought this paper would be great as not too much matching up but having employed professionals to paper the room was really disappointed. The black was a constant problem - all over the fellas hands and then spreading to the pale parts of the paper. If you crease the paper at all it leaves white lines as the black is removed and I had to purchase 4 rolls just to cover two walls, one whole drop having to be replaced as it bubbled and didn't settle as other papers would. I would not recommend this paper

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Looks Good When Up But Be Very Careful We bought 2 rolls of this paper for a feature wall. We found that the paper itself is quite thin and delicate, especially once its been pasted. You can't afford to get any accidental paste onto the patterned side as else it dries glossy and shows as shiny patches. We tried to rub these off with a damp cloth but the silver and especially the black colour is prone to come off and my husband had to touch up the black sections with paint. Conclusion: Expensive for the quality!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horrific stuff! Purchased for a feature wall, looks great once its up but then the problems start. As the paper dries it strinks dramatically and unevenly. I used wallpaper adhesive instead of paste. Also on the labelling it claims that it can be cleaned with a wet cloth however the black colouring comes off when you try to do so. B&Q North Shields were very understanding, they tested the paper instore and found that the black stripe rubbed off with cold water and little effort. Their customer service was 1st class. They gave me a full refund.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Rubbish I bought this for my son's room. The black runs into the white which does wipe off but then the black has faded. Doesn't cut well even when dry. I would not recommend. It's a waste of money and looks awful.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Absolute Rubbish Ok, the title to this review is absolute rubbish, in reality that's being polite. Never had a paper before that distorts when you paste it, and certainly never had a paper where the print comes off when you wipe it to remove excess paste. Maybe B & Q should put star ratings on display in store to save people like us wasting our time and money on doo like this.
