How to prepare for new flooring

How to prepare for new flooring

Whether you go for vinyl, carpet or even ceramic tiles, changing your floor covering is a great way to give a room a new lease of life. But before you start work, make sure the surface underneath is sound and level. If it isn't, any defects are likely to show through. This will spoil the look of your new floor and eventually cause it to wear unevenly. Luckily, there are some effective ways to deal with problem floors which we will share with you.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great floor love it I am a woman aged 44 and laid this floor in my sons room the L shaped hallway and my very large bedroom with alcove. Ive got to say i have laid easier floors but this tops them for finished result. I used a jigsaw to cut it with no damage. I had a few choice words in places when couldnt get it to click together but overall am glad i stuck at it. Just the lounge to do but need a rest first lol. The only advice is if its a bigger room and u put the row together then click into previous row i needed 2 people at times as got one end in the other came out lol. As you will see from photos i was putting new skirting boards on as well. Joins in threshold are a very thin piece of arched wood with oak varnish then stuck down with bit of no nails. The delivery men from b&q are brilliant. Very pleased thank you

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great finish We looked at lots of different options and then when we found we could get this for less than most printed laminates thought we would give it a try. We bought 10% more than we needed as recommended - which was good as there was one board with an area a the end we couldn't use - but other than that the product was really great quality and looks fantastic down - we have solid wood in the hall and you can't tell the difference ( other than the one in your wallet!)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very good for price, don't be put off by reviews. I think the negative reiviews of this product are unfair. There seem to be three points raised. 1. Difficulty in laying - This is the only wood flooring I have laid so I can't compare to others which I assume must be easier (hence the reviews). I can also see why people found this product difficult as there is a knack to it, it does not go flat unless hammered, and as with any flooring the edges require a fairly high level of DIY to get right, I also found particularlty on the short edges alot of wacking with a tapping block was needed which did annoy my neighbours so do be aware of when you do it. That said if you follow the instructions, have the right tools and are comptent at DIY you should have no issues and can get a great looking level finish with no gaps. I suspect people who have encountered issues are cutting corners either with their tools or in following the instructions. A genuine tapping blcok will help you avoid damaming the edges when you hit them as you do have to hit hard to get a good finish. This may be why some have had issues. Also keeping the packs flat and allowing them 48hrs to acclimatise before unwrapping is important. Once I got the hang of it I have just layed a second room of 14sqm in one day. 2. Variation in colour etc - This is a real wood therefore you should expect and appreciate variations. As the instructions say it is best to mix up sereval packs to avoid complete strips of one tone. As with many similar things the best way to do this is randomly any kind of planning and delibrately choosing similar boards will only result in creating a worse blend. If what you want is a uniform finish why did you choose real wood? Real wood is harder to lay and wears more easily than laminate so if you don't like its unique variations why choose it? 3. Scractes easily - Again this is a feature of the real wood. Oak is Oak after all and it therefore has the same properties as very expensive solid oak flooring in that you can scracth it. Especially if you have any metal touching it. Be careful with tools and furniture. Always use felt pads on all furniture. I found this out the first time when my decorating step ladder scracthed all around the edges as I was painting. I now have rubber feet on it. Again don't choose real wood of any kind if your worried about scrathes. On the plus side being real wood does allow you to repair it. Either with a filler/wax/polish or by sanding down. The packs claim you can sand and refinish 2 or 3 times hence the lifetime can be longer than laminate. Overall this product allowed us to have a real wood finish for the price of laminate (which we otherwise could not have afforded) and that to me is brilliant and worth a bit of effort laying. I'd question the skills of any professional who can't lay this product well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from No problems for a first-timer I'm baffled by all the negative reviews for this flooring - glad I didn't read them before buying because they might have put me off. I'm about 3/4 of the way through laying a new floor in by bedroom (about 14 square metres) with these boards, and I'm delighted with the results. I'm an experienced DIYer, but I haven't laid a laminate floor before, so this was a learning process for me. Several things I learned quickly: 1. You won't get very far without a pulling bar to get the last board into the end of each row. I bought the heavy-duty Diall bar sold by B&Q and it works great. Like every other job, it becomes much easier with the right tools. 2. You're supposed to be able to lay the underlay down loose, but I found it easier to fix the sheets in place at the corners with a staple gun to stop them getting kicked about when I'm moving around the room (I'm laying this floor over wooden floorboards). 3. A pulling bar is the only specialist tool I've needed, the rest is just general DIY stuff. Don't bother buying spacers and expansion strips. Offcuts make fine spacers, and you can cut your own expansion strips out of a pack of cork tiles and save money. Any old block of scrap wood will do for a tapping block. I found a club hammer gives the extra welly to get the joints super tight, and it works well with both the tapping block and the pulling bar. 4. Like tiling, getting the first row right is crucial, so spend some time on that. After that, all the rest literally clicks into place, apart from the fiddly bits round corners, radiator pipes etc. 5. Measure twice, cut once - and check you're cutting the right end off the board, they're different! Save all your offcuts, they'll all come in handy somewhere. Since this is my first laminate floor, I can't say how difficult these boards are to fit together compared to others, but I haven't had any problems, and the new floor looks a thousand times better than the filthy old carpet it's replacing. I'm happy with this product, and feel the price and quality is a reasonable compromise between the very cheap laminates and the very expensive solid woods. I reckon I've saved about £300 on installation by doing the job myself, so well worth a couple of day's hard work.
