How to fit ceiling lights

How to fit ceiling lights

A standard single pendant light fitting near the centre of the ceiling can sometimes leave a lot to be desired. As long as you can get to the ceiling void from above without too much disruption, it's not complicated to move a light to wherever you really need it. Alternatively, you can boost your light levels by adding extra pendants which you operate either by the existing switch or by a new one. You'll find that pre-wired lampholder-plus-flex combinations are widely available.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simple and effective Happy I found this and it really lights up the room. Love the design. This is the 2nd piece, the 1st was the same, with 3 lamps.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Fitting is a pain Although this light looks great once it's in place, I strongly suspect the designer has never in their life tried installing a light. Especially not in the UK. Firstly, the fittings supplied are masonry plugs. Your ceiling will be made either from plasterboard or if it's pre-war, lath and plaster. Ceilings are not made of brick, so you will need 2 appropriate screw fixings. The supplied ones will simply not grip in a ceiling. Secondly, you are required to remove the ceiling rose, which has terminals for 11 wires. 6 for the ring main, 3 for the light switch, 2 to the original pendant. The Bellini spiral has 3 terminals, marked L,E,N. The ring main and switch reds (3) have to be grouped together into one terminal of a loose block, which to me feels like a bit of a bodge. The earth wires obviously go to the E terminal, the black ring ring wires all go to the N terminal, and the remaining black wire with a red marker collar from the switch completes the circuit on the L terminal. Now the fun starts. The whole light fitting is quite wide and does not dismantle, so those stiff little pieces of single core wire no more than 40mm long sticking out of the ceiling have to go into the terminal block which is fixed in place in the top of the fitting, and then tightened with a screwdriver. It is physically impossible to get the ceiling wires into the fitting and get a screwdriver at the right angle (bearing in mind you will also be on top of a step ladder.) I ended up feeding the ceiling wires into a separate terminal block which I found in my man-drawer and connecting a very short piece of flex to the terminal block in the fitting. After that it was quite a task to stuff everything into the base of the fitting, which is very small. To the reviewer who says the bulbs blow because of the heat, try LED GU10 bulbs. You will then be burning 12 to 20W instead of 160 to 200W for the equivalent halogens, and so the fitting stays completely cool.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Jane64 The lights are ok but you didn't have the right bulbs to go with them so I have got odd colored bulbs in them most disappointing

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Very nice looking light Love the light, although the bulbs seem to blow really easily....only had ours for 3 weeks and all 4 bulbs have blown already!
