How to check an electrical system is safe

How to check an electrical system is safe

There are some tell-tale signs that your system is out of date and unsafe to work on (old-style rubber-sheathed cable, for example). But even if you live in a modern house with an electrical system that's been professionally checked and approved in the past ten years, things can still go wrong. So make sure it's safe before you begin work.

If you're in any doubt, get it checked by a qualified electrician.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from easy to use better than i hoped I bought this as i suffer from a heart condition and i am constantly too hot. I was using a air cooler and 3 fans but this was enough alone!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GREAT COOLER WITH MINOR ISSUES I was thinking of buying a full AC unit but didnt have space or wanted to spend £300 and have pipes to run. However I was concerned that this would not cool room much. I have it standing at the end of the bed and its more than powerfull enough to take me from too hot to quite chilly.. Love it... Im now cool and sleeping well. Nice remote so it can be operated in bed . turns from side to side and can be stopped on remote to face wich ever direction you want. Over all Im happy and I saved £200 over a AC unit and will save allot of electricity too. Now for the down sides... even on low setting its quite powerfull and little noisy. I would like to see a lower setting. The sleep mode really means keep awake mode. Randomly changes speed to keep you awake. Not the most convenient thing to fill but not difficult either. So good functional unit but it would not take many changes to make this thing fantastic.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brilliant when you know how to use it We purchased this is a last ditch attempt to get our flat down a few degrees (it was 32 during the day!) and at first I wasn't impressed. It blew alot and didn't seem to do anything... so with a bit of online reading on how best to use an evaporative cooler (swamp cooler to the USA) it is the complete opposite to a traditional AC unit. Basically this unit creates cool and humid air, and this air pushes hot air. So, you need somewhere for all this hot air to go, which means you open a window or 2. The faster the fan speed on the unit, the more windows you need open, and I don't mean cracked open I mean open! Managed to get the flat a cool 5 degrees colder by opening windows in the space you want to cool, however don't have too many windows open or you let more hot air in than you can force out. And don't open the doors to let the hot air into another part of your home. Again, remember this is not AC and will not cool your house in the same way, but when used correctly is very effective. Sleep mode is useless on this and just swaps between fan speeds every 5 seconds, and on the fastest setting it isn't exactly quiet however I am happy with the noise if it means I'm not roasting!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from remote control I bought 1 last year and its brilliant .I was bought a second one this year but the remote control does not work even though the cooler works I took it back to B&Q but they had sold out so I couldn't get a different control. They should have an spare parts area so that you can get just the controllers separately. the assistant was very helpful but was unable to give a new control so took the cooler home and use it manually

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great room cooler Bought this to replace and old one which stopped working after 9 years. It does the job, keeps me cool at night. It's not too noisy and easy to operate. It only has 4 stars as it is a bit fiddly to empty. Otherwise I am really pleased with it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A good fan and AC alternative Bought this product a week ago, it works very well and does a nice job of keeping the room cool. The instructions manual is easy to read and understand how the features work. The main features of course are the air cooling/humidifier via the small water reservoir at the bottom and just using it as a regular fan. You can set how many hours you want it to stay on for also. It is also very easy to clean and maintain. The different modes that the fan can run seem relatively pointless, especially on natural mode where it just seems to fluctuate between different speeds every few seconds before turning itself off and back on again. I have experienced a fault with the product where no matter what socket I plugged it into it would not turn on for about a half day (somehow this went away and it is working again now). Overall I am happy with this product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very powerful fan The Fan in this cooler is at least 2 or 3 times more powerful than my B&Q tower fan. This also means double the noise however. This is not an air conditioner, it's an air cooler. It pumps water from the base over a corrugated fabric that cools the air passing over it. Should this water eventually evaporate a warning beep will remind you to refill it. You can put ice or frozen plastic freezer packs/blocks into the water reservoir to assist the cooling if desired. I would say its better than a tower fan, but nowhere as good as an air conditioner, however it's one third of the price of an air con, and you don't have the issue of where to vent the hot air of an air con. I put a Milton Tablet in the water reservoir once a week to prevent bacterial growth and this seems to have no detrimental effect on its operation. In fact it seems to give an Ozone fragrance to the air. Overall I'm pleased with its operation, but if temperatures were to exceed summer 2014 peak's I would consider a portable air con vented properly through the wall. Overall a good buy.
