Questions to ask before you begin

Which room in the house are you painting?

What goes on in the room you are planning to paint? Maybe you are painting a kitchen or bathroom that would benefit from a moisture-resistant paint. Some rooms might need an extra hard-wearing paint which can be wiped down and cleaned such as hallways, landings or kid’s bedrooms. Finding the right paint isn’t just about which colour you pick. We have different types of paint designed for use in different rooms. By choosing the paint that is specially designed for the type of room you are painting, you will get the best end result.

What type of surface are you painting?

There are different types of paint for different surface materials. As well as a comprehensive selection of emulsion paints for walls and ceilings, we have a wide range of specialist paint including ones that are designed for wood furniture, brick walls, and tiles. Choosing the right paint for the right material will ensure a longer-lasting result and the best coverage.

What kind of look are you going for?

Maybe your home has quite a traditional look and would suit a subtle, matt effect paint. Or perhaps you have a more contemporary style that would look great with a satin or metallic finish paint. When selecting paint, think about what you want the final look to be, so that you can choose the correct finish as well as the right colour.

How much time do you have to complete your decorating project?

If you need to get your painting job done quickly, we have a wide range of quick-drying options that will help you get a whole room decorated in a few hours. We have quick dry wall paint, primers, and wood and metal paint to help you make the most of your time whatever you are painting.

What state is the surface in?

Some of our interior paints can be applied directly to the surface. Others may require a bit of preparation before you can begin painting. Perhaps you are painting a freshly plastered surface or previously untreated wood, or maybe you need to fill in some holes or sand down an uneven surface. We have paints and primers for all sorts of surfaces that will help you achieve a nice, even finish.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not as bad as it looks! I bought this paint and for the price I paid I think it's done a better job that most have given it credit for! The one I bought was a thick, paint consistency, has covered the walls [which were a different colour to the product] effectively, and I'd use it again

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good value for money Bought this over a month ago to paint my living room and hall and am really happy with the finish. Great value for money.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from spend a little more money!! Please! I wish I'd spent a little more money and got some decent paint!! Consistency looked ok-but is gritty when painted on! Stupidly decided to o give the wall a second coat-it's now even worse?! Going to have to sand the wall back, go and get some more paint (more time and money) and repeat the whole process again GGGRRR!!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Waste of Money Coat after coat after coat and it was still patchy. In the end I gave up and painted over it with Dulux. Perfect!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from endless ammount of coats not worth it . Im doing a room that is 2.5 x 3 m and got through 15L and its still patchy. It goes on like water and I have lost count how many coats its had . The only reason i kept going as magnolia is not just a magnolia and this is a lovely warm colour and exactly what i was after but will never buy this range again its just not worth it . Works out just as expensive as the brand i normally use and the amount of coats is ridiculous .

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor coverage. Buying this paint depends if value money more than time. I value my time which had I known this paint was so poor at covering I would have paid the extra for decent covering paint. The third coat still looks anaemic. I would say this paint represents value ONLY if you are covering the same colour.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I cannot believe I am reviewing paint But yes I am. When you are putting on a 4th coat still trying to get paint to "take" and cover the colour below you have plenty of time to ponder on what more useful things you could be doing had you actually bought proper paint and have been long finished by now. Don't let this happen to you! Worse still, envisaging having a good run right through our new house I'd gone and bought a 10 litre tub of the stuff. I am off to buy some real paint.
