Help & Advice

How to guides

How to build a shed base

How to build a shed base

A firm, level base should be the starting point for any shed or garden building. Without this the structure is likely to be assembled improperly - screw holes will not line up correctly, doors may not fit their doorways and the quality and service life of your shed could be greatly reduced.

There are a number of different options to create the necessary flat and level surface, and we're going to take you through four of them. All are ideal to prevent water collecting around the shed floor and damaging it. These four methods are how to lay:

  • a timber base (also known as a portabase)
  • a plastic base
  • a paved base, and
  • a concrete base

Both paved and concrete bases can't be laid straight onto soft ground and so require a sub-base. A concrete base also has a further extra step - constructing the frame or edging that supports concrete while it sets, this is known as formwork. So do bear in mind that these options can take longer to build than the timber and plastic bases.

Simply choose the one for you and read through the step-by-step advice on how to lay your shed base.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Look! Greenhouse is now up but not yet running. It looks good and the chaps who put it up for me found it relatively easy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from totally satisfied Excellent greenhouse i put it up over one wknd on my own with no problems doing the main frame on the Saturday and glazing on the Sunday. My only problem arose the following wknd when i decided to put an automatic window opener in the roof, because we have a prevailing easterly wind I'd decided to place the opening window on the left of the greenhouse rather than the right which is shown on the booklet provided for installation thinking it would not be an issue it all seemed to look right it took me four frustrating days to work out why i couldn't get the fixings on the auto vent to match up with the frame with numerous emails going back and forth between me, Halls, plus the manufactures of the auto vent for me to work out the problem lay with me and my modifications to there assembly plans. Be warned stick to the instructions !

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great little greenhouse the greenhouse itself was well packaged and went together reasonably easy with two people. once together and secured to the base it pays to spend time ensuring everything is square before putting in the glass. Sadly two of the panes were broken and we still await to see what the company say about replacements. Everything else ok so far...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Ideal Small Greenhouse I ordered this greenhouse for a corner of the garden for growing tomatoes and seedlings. For a bargain price it is a good quality structure that is quite feasible to self-erect. All the bits were present and recognisable from the instruction manual, which was adequate, but a little difficult to follow for a first time construction job. Everything fitted together and formed a solid structure once the glass was installed (a little unstable in the high winds before the glass was fitted). Only complaints were: the self-tapping screws holding the door together were of poor quality and several bent or even sheared off before fully tightening - there were no spares, so I had to replace some from another source. Also the standard instructions for installing the roof window panel were based on a minimum 6 ft greenhouse with 3 roof panels - the parts supplied for a 4 ft greenhouse with 2 panels were different: they did work eventually, but you had to work out how yourself. Overall a good buy, with a couple of initial niggles in the construction stage.
