How to prepare a wall for painting

How to prepare a wall for painting

While it can be tempting to get painting as soon as possible when you want to decorate a room, it’s worth taking the time to make sure your room and surfaces are best prepared before you begin. Getting the preparation right is crucial to achieving the perfect finish. It’ll also help to keep things neater and cleaner, and reduce the need for additional coats of paint. No paint can completely cover dirty or uneven surfaces, so tackling this at the start of the project avoids the need for extra work later on.

In this guide we’ll walk you through the most important steps to take, and show you how to;

  • Empty your room ready for decorating, and protect fixtures and fittings you aren't painting
  • Clean your walls to help paint adhere
  • Fill holes and cracks and smooth your walls for the best possible finish
  • Prime stained surfaces or those which have not been painted before

Once you've completed these tasks you should have a smooth, even surface ready to be painted.

If you're painting on bare wood, plaster or metal surfaces, you'll get a better result if you use a primer first. It provides a surface which the paint can bond to and stops the paint being absorbed. Find out more what you need and for what surface.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic product I cant understand why I never thought to use one of these before. I've painted walls and ceilings many times over the years but this cuts the painting time in half easily. It's so easy to use and just so convenient.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from so easy Painted hall and stairway and this roller made it so easy to do. No neck ache and more than halved the time of hand roller as no going up and down ladder. An excellent product for the price. I didn't use the roller supplied in case it gave a different finish to the one i had been using for the walls. My roller fitted perfectly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great roller I brought the roll to paint a high hall way very good

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Decent if not top-notch At this price, I can't really complain - this is a slightly flimsy but basically ok roller. Did four ceilings at home with it. You'd obviously want to pay to get something sturdier for more extensive or commercial use.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very very bad, please don't buy this Rubbish , it I bought 3weeks ago I use only one time it was broken , I just weast money , please don't buy this Rubbish , 100% negative

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Garbage Broke on the second room I was painting, in two different places. Bought a Harris telescopic roller instead and couldn't be happier with that. You definitely get what you pay for.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Rubbish Bought one last night, painted 2sq ft of a ceiling this evening and the plastic roller mount snapped clean off the end of the pole. Ended up wedging the remaining bit of the pole in to a harris roller to get the job finished. Don't waste your money on this product - buy a decent roller and a metal pole.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor quality inferior product Poor quality, roller completely broke half way through the job - not up to the pressure needed to actually apply paint to the ceiling. The pole doesn't fit a variety of rollers either (or certainly not the 4 different rollers in my shed!). Save your money - wish I hadn't wasted mine.
