Questions to ask before you begin

Which room in the house are you painting?

What goes on in the room you are planning to paint? Maybe you are painting a kitchen or bathroom that would benefit from a moisture-resistant paint. Some rooms might need an extra hard-wearing paint which can be wiped down and cleaned such as hallways, landings or kid’s bedrooms. Finding the right paint isn’t just about which colour you pick. We have different types of paint designed for use in different rooms. By choosing the paint that is specially designed for the type of room you are painting, you will get the best end result.

What type of surface are you painting?

There are different types of paint for different surface materials. As well as a comprehensive selection of emulsion paints for walls and ceilings, we have a wide range of specialist paint including ones that are designed for wood furniture, brick walls, and tiles. Choosing the right paint for the right material will ensure a longer-lasting result and the best coverage.

What kind of look are you going for?

Maybe your home has quite a traditional look and would suit a subtle, matt effect paint. Or perhaps you have a more contemporary style that would look great with a satin or metallic finish paint. When selecting paint, think about what you want the final look to be, so that you can choose the correct finish as well as the right colour.

How much time do you have to complete your decorating project?

If you need to get your painting job done quickly, we have a wide range of quick-drying options that will help you get a whole room decorated in a few hours. We have quick dry wall paint, primers, and wood and metal paint to help you make the most of your time whatever you are painting.

What state is the surface in?

Some of our interior paints can be applied directly to the surface. Others may require a bit of preparation before you can begin painting. Perhaps you are painting a freshly plastered surface or previously untreated wood, or maybe you need to fill in some holes or sand down an uneven surface. We have paints and primers for all sorts of surfaces that will help you achieve a nice, even finish.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Ideal for covering freshly plastered walls. I've bought several tubs of this to paint recently plastered bare surfaces (done in the last 3 years). It's excellent for that, it can be watered down and one can sometimes hear the plaster sucking up the water. Its ideal for painting walls that have had distemper (the type that is made from dusty pigment, whiting & glue) scrubbed and steamed off them and are then bare plaster. The great thing about this paint is exactly what the complaints are, it's watery, I've watered it extra to 50/50 and even 75/25 so it's mainly water and it goes on gloriously smooth and fine. The bad side to this paint is it does tend to saturate the underlying surface with wetness, even undiluted, which can make the paint pull off layers of paint/remnants of artex material on the ceiling that it's going over. My advice is to make sure you go over existing painted surfaces quickly and without multiple runs of the roller. It's okay to do it over previous coats of this paint though. The other benefit is this paint appears to be acrylic, not vinyl. Both are plastics but acrylic Matt is more stylish and allows the wall to breathe a bit more.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from absolutely fine! I don't usually buy cheap paint, but i had a dark red dining room to paint and knew it would take several coats to cover. Rather than spend a fortunate on an expensive brand, i decided to use a cheaper paint for the initial coverage. I was really quite surprised that two coats of this stuff covered the red walls. I will say that after the second coat i was prepared for another coat...but once it dried up i found it had covered it well. I didn't bother buying a more expensive brand after all and would buy this again!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Buy cheap buy twice Awful product, waste of time and money, buy a branded name

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Awful pointless paint - it will not save yo money! Please stop selling this. It devalues your brand and annoys your customers. It is watery and comes off. I thought this might be a few quid well spent. But unfortunately I bought cheap and now I won't buy again. After one coat I can still see the pale yellow walls underneath. While applying the second coat, the brush took off what was already on the walls. I'm not bothering with the 3rd coat. I am going to buy some proper paint instead. Even thought the tub says you will need to apply a few coast this is in fact impossible.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from shocking! Bought brand as lack of pennies. Won't do this again, had to seive paint due to so many lumps!!!
Date published: 2015-04-15
Rated 1 out of 5 by from disappointing product This paint looks grey in the tub, goes on grey and dries off white. I would spend more and buy a different product. Its not cheap relative to other own brands. Best used for diluting for mist coating new plaster, even for that I would look elsewhere.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from if the paint gets wet it trickles down the walls! a watery excuse for a paint which is going back to b&q, because if you get it wet, it simply wipes off the wall. Useless! No one else has mentioned this and wondering if anyone else has had this problem? My advice ... stick to Dulux.
