How to repair your fence or gate

How to repair your fence or gate

Wooden gates and fences can be prone to rot, or to attacks by insects. To prolong their life, try and treat them regularly with wood preservative. It's also a good idea to avoid piling earth up against your fence, and to fit gravel boards at its base.

Top tip - Wood preservative

A coat of preservative will dramatically extend the life of your fence or gate, as most treatments keep fungi and insects at bay for several years. As the wood needs to be completely dry, the best time to apply it is in late summer after a dry period, and when no rain is expected for a day or so. Paint it on with a block paintbrush or use a garden pressure spray - making sure to wear protective gloves (and safety goggles and a mask too, if you're spraying).

Buying guides

Gates buying guide

Gates buying guide

There is a wide choice of garden gates and as well as the obvious access benefits they can really help complete the look of your fence, wall or hedge boundary. Gates come in a whole raft of different designs and generally are either wood or metal, so whether you want a decorative entrance to your driveway or a privacy gate in your back garden fence, be sure to choose the best one for you.

Once you’ve selected your design there are a few key points to consider before you buy your gate:

  • How wide will your gate need to be – remember to leave a bit of room for your hinges and locks if needed.
  • How and where will you hang the gate – you can either attach your gate to a wall, brick or concrete piers, or hang it from timber posts.
  • Which way will the gate open – some designs will have left and right-handed opening versions.
