How to prepare for new flooring

How to prepare for new flooring

Whether you go for vinyl, carpet or even ceramic tiles, changing your floor covering is a great way to give a room a new lease of life. But before you start work, make sure the surface underneath is sound and level. If it isn't, any defects are likely to show through. This will spoil the look of your new floor and eventually cause it to wear unevenly. Luckily, there are some effective ways to deal with problem floors which we will share with you.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful! I changed my mind to this product at the last minute as I saw it in an b&q superstore. I am so happy I did! The colour is lovely and it looks amazing in my flat. Apparently it was easy to lay also. I am now thinking about taking it into the bedrooms!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this flooring I read all the reviews before I purchased this laminate and I didn't see one bad one! That'll be because " it does what is says on the tin"!! It was easy to fit, looks fantastic, I really do love it, doesn't scratch or chip, I've got a huge dog and 6 grandchildren playing on this flooring so it needed to be good, I've had it fitted through the hall, kitchen, lounge and dining room, looks like real wood, you won't be disappointed if you get this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Quality Love the colour of this flooring, it has been down in my house for over two months and I am still getting comments about it. Brilliant purchase and excellent price for the quality, would recommend to not only friends but the whole of the UK?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just the job Really hard wearing - don't have to worry about heels walking on this floor and denting it as they wont! Glad paid a little bit more to have the more real wood look - nice warm colour. Would buy again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from good buy very easy to lay as there are 2 different ways. Click system or tap into each other which makes tight angles easier. The floor colour has made a north facing room much lighter. Have used quick.step flooring a few years ago in another house and I am glad they have not changed the way you lay it

Rated 5 out of 5 by from High recommended We went for this product because we'd heard it didn't scratch easily, looked good and was easy to fit. It hasn't let us down. It's worth the extra money if you want a floor that's going to last, and it looks excellent.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sunlight fades the colour over 5 years I have just bought a house that has this uniclic flooring. The flooring was most likely put down about 7 years ago when the house was extended. (I found some leftover planks in the loft, that's how I know it is uniclic.) Most reviews here just give the buyers initial reaction, whereas I thought it would be useful to share with you how it lasts 7 years down the line. COLOR The floor is 6.5m by 2.5 meters. The end of the room has a patio door into the garden. This area of the floor, which is exposed to a lot of sunlight, has faded a lot. In natural light, this fading is not obvious. In fact, I can barely see it even though I know it is there. But at night with the lights on, it becomes very clear that the colour has faded a lot. (This is because the lighting becomes even, unlike in the day where light comes through the window.) The floor has faded so much that it is actually starting to turn green in the worst area right in front of the patio door. I think in another year or two this will be too obvious to put up with. However, the other end of the room which is in a dark area is in mint condition. So this product is clearly vulnerable to direct sunlight. Therefore, my advice would be as follows: 1) Do not put this down near patio doors or 2) Buy enough spare planks so you can replace that area (about 2 meters from the patio door, times the width of the room) when it starts to fade 4 years down the line. It is like a photograph. If you leave it in the sun it fades and turns yellow pretty quickly. DURABILITY In terms of durability, it seems strong. I noticed two chips in the floor but they are not so obvious and I think this is not bad considering it has been down 7 years or so. It looks very well put together, solid, there's no creaking or any quality problem with it really. The only issue is a slight dip in one part of the floor, when you stand on it you can see it move down, but this is no doubt caused by stupid installer laying it over a dip in the floor instead of filling the dip as uniclic instruct on their youtube video. CONCLUSION I had been considering ripping up the floor and putting down a real wood floor. But now I have learnt more about the product, I am planning to just replace the area that has faded instead as it is half the price of wood floor. At first glance it looks like a real wood floor, it is only when you look at it and ask yourself 'is it real wood' that you can see that it is a plastic product. It seems like the manufacturer is a solid company, they have a wide range on their website and I figure I can still buy replacement product another 10 years down the line. This is also an important consideration, if you go for solid wood I guess it is unlikely you can get replacement planks a decade later.
