How to put up curtains and blinds

How to put up curtains and blinds

Curtains and blinds block out light and drafts, as well as giving you more privacy. But they can also be a distinctive design feature - introducing colour, pattern and texture into any room in your home. Curtain tracks and poles, too, come in loads of different designs to suit every style of interior. But if you're going for ready-made curtains it's a good idea to choose them before you buy your track or pole, as you might find they're designed to be hung from a particular type of fitting.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent product: Instructions on cutting to size Preparation: Firstly, work out how much you need to cut off. The width of the blind includes the brackets, so the amount you're cutting off is the original width, minus the new total width including brackets. Take a photo of the end so that you can see direction of the roll and how the blind is arranged and attached. You will need: Tape measure Pencil Hacksaw (or some other cutting device_ Long nosed pliers Scissors A big clean space to do the work in. Introduction: You're going to take it all apart and cut it and reassemble it. All the fittings are push fit (no glue or rivets) but they are well and truly jammed in (unless you are lucky) so this can be done. I'd be very happy to do it again if need be. You're going to be cutting 4 parts. The head rail (the bit at the top with the brackets on that it all hangs from), the bottom rail (that hangs in the blind), the blind itself, and the blind roller. Apart from the blind they are made of metal and need sawing. Decide which end you are going to cut off, probably best to do the end without the pull cord. (if you want to change the side of the pull cord I think it can be done, but you would need to cut a bit off both ends. Being straight and tidy. It's important to get your cuts as straight as possible, but they don't need to be perfect. The plastic fittings will cover minor mistakes. Be careful when cutting the blind, because everyone will see this. Also, take care when handling the blind because you don't want to damage the material (I was surprised quite how strong it was but I wouldn't want to ruin all my hard work by ripping a hole in it or putting a great big dirty mark on it). Step 1: Disassembly: Remove the bottom rail - the plastic hooks just pull out. Remove the roller - at the non pull cord end there is a little retaining clip in the bracket, which you can push out (keep it safe), then the roller can be lifted out of the brackets. Remove the end of the blind from the head rail - now you've remove the roller this should be easy to slide this out of the channel. Now it's all apart it's much easier to deal with. Step 2: Measure/mark You are going to shorten the constituent parts by the amount you worked out before you started. Mark where you are going to cut on the head rail, measure from the end of the metal, not the brackets. Mark where you are going to cut on the bottom rails, again, being careful to measure from the end of the metal not the plastic fittings. Step 3: Getting the fittings out of the head and bottom rail (the roller fittings should come out easily). On the end you are going to cut off, cut off a short piece (about 2cm) off both, this will enable you to get to the fittins to remove them. To get the head rail bracket off. If you look at the cut end, you will see that on one side there is a complete rectangle of metal. This seems to be the bit that is really holding the bracket. So cut along the face of it (one of the short sides of the rectangle) carefully with a hacksaw, trying hard not to cut or damage the bracket. Once you have a cut across the whole length of you your 2cm piece, take the long nosed pliers and open up the rectangle. You should then be able to ease the bracket out. The bottom rail bracket is much easier. Make sure that you've pulled the hook out (it should just pop out) leaving a clear plastic socket behind. Use a similar diameter item, like the end of interchangeable screwdriver without any bit in and gently tap it out. Have a cup of tea. Step 4: Cutting to size. Now cut the head rail on your original mark, straight across. Now cut the bottom rail on your original mark, straight across. Unroll and cut the blind, measuring and marking a cut line with a pencil. You could, if your eyesight was up to it, cut along a weft line in the fabric as it seems to be very straight. But I measure all the way. Once you get to the metal roller pull off the blind material from the end until just past where you are going to cut, cut it and stick the bit down. Roll the blind back up tightly and evenly. Step 5: Cutting the roller. Measure and mark the metal roller and cut it to length (so take off the same as everywhere else, all my cuts were 43 cm) Cut the roller carefully making sure you don't damage the blind itself. Step 6: Reassemble! Insert the head rail bracket into the cut end. Insert the bottom rail fitting into the cut end. Insert the roller fittings into roller. Have a look at your photo, to make sure you clear on what way round everything goes. Slide the end of the blind (with the plastic strip in) into the special channel. (it should be just a bit narrower. Remount the blind by pushing the cord end into the bracket, then at the other end locate it in the bracket and push in the retaining clip. Put the bottom rail in and locate the hooks over the edges of the blind. You should now be ready to put it all up! Good luck.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Can be resized but need good tools and patience Needed to resize these blinds, this took some time and good tools. you need to make 4 cuts, 3 aluminium 1 the actual blind. You need a good Hacksaw with a fine blade a good sharp pair large scissors, dress makers would be best and 1 roll of double sided tape.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Day/night Blind (white) I bought 2 of these blinds one fitted perfect! The other was way too wide. I adapted it to fit but it wasn't very easy as said in a previous review that it was! It took a lot of time and patience... But once done both the blinds look great. Already looking to buy for other rooms in the house
