How to lay vinyl floor tiles

How to lay vinyl floor tiles

Soft vinyl floor tiles are really versatile and make an excellent hard-wearing floor in any room. Some types stick to the floor with tile adhesive, while others come with a self-adhesive backing (so all you do is peel off the paper that covers them). Tiles that are pre-coated with adhesive are generally quicker to lay and don't create a mess either. They're light to work with and if you make a mistake, you only ruin one tile rather than a whole (expensive) sheet of vinyl.

Vinyl flooring buying guide

Vinyl has come a long way since the 'lino' of old in kitchens and bathrooms across Britain. It's now available in a huge range of styles, thicknesses and textures - some designs being embossed to look more realistically like other materials such as wood and stone. Modern vinyl is also easier to cut and fit, with some types even able to accommodate underfloor heating.

What you need to know about vinyl

Vinyl flooring

Vinyl flooring is hard-wearing, easy to clean, hygienic and resists water well. In addition, it's softer and warmer under floor than a tiled floor. If you're planning to use it in areas where splashes are frequent - the bathroom and kitchen, for example - you should make sure you buy vinyl flooring with an R10 slip resistance rating. This means a slip-resistant layer has been added to the top surface of the vinyl.

Another important thing to consider is thickness. Get vinyl flooring that's too thin and it'll feel cold under foot. The thicker the vinyl your floor can take, the softer and warmer it'll be. You'll also find it offers better sound insulation, which is particularly useful in bathrooms. If you're laying vinyl flooring in high-traffic areas, you'll want a thicker wear layer (the part of the product which gives it durability).
