How to prepare walls for painting

How to prepare walls for painting

While it can be tempting to get painting as soon as possible when you want to decorate a room, it’s worth taking the time to make sure your room and surfaces are best prepared before you begin. Getting the preparation right is crucial to achieving the perfect finish. It’ll also help to keep things neater and cleaner, and reduce the need for additional coats of paint. No paint can completely cover dirty or uneven surfaces, so tackling this at the start of the project avoids the need for extra work later on.

In this guide we’ll walk you through the most important steps to take, and show you how to;

  • Empty your room ready for decorating, and protect fixtures and fittings you aren't painting
  • Clean your walls to help paint adhere
  • Fill holes and cracks and smooth your walls for the best possible finish
  • Prime stained surfaces or those which have not been painted before

Once you've completed these tasks you should have a smooth, even surface ready to be painted.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent! Purchased this to paint my new picket fence.... Colour:- Pale Jasmine is an off white and whilst still striking, isn't as stark as pure white. Flowers look stunning against it and it creates a lovely frame to the garden. Quite a few people have suggested white will show the dirt....this is rubbish. It wears dust and dirt well and shows up less than it would if I painted black, after all dirt is closer in colour to grey/white than it is black. Coverage and application:- As it says on the tin, two coats are required. The first coat is the hardest as the new wood just soaked it up. I found a normal indoor paintbrush was the best brush for application, less messy and much more accurate than a fence brush. I'd recommend this product. :-)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lovely cream white colour Used the pale jasmine on the posts, garden shed and fence, expensive especially when a few coats are required, but it does look good. Cuprinol silver birch was used on the deck and still looks good after 2 years with no touch ups.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great look Painted a newly erected log cabin love both colour choices true to colour on tin. One coat of pale jasmine gives a lovely look of colour washed walls inside but 3 coats needed on outside.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb wood paint This paint is wonderful. It is very thin which means it soaks straight into the wood and it the easiest paint I've ever used. It takes about 3 coats to get the desired colour but covers well. I painted a horrible dark brown shed with it and the results are amazing. There's obviously some kind of plasticiser/latex in the paint which means it is very flexible. I can see it lasting years. Don't be put off when you see how thin it is, just apply 3 coats and marvel at your work. Honestly it was a joy to use compared to some other paints - so much so Ive done all of my fence panels in just a few hours. It cleans up well and has no nasty smell. I love the colours in the range as well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for the Playhouse Used to paint a playhouse, does need 3 coats to get required colour but what do you expect when painting white on a base brown colour! Great finish, easy to apply & quick drying time! Used with Willow and I think a great finish!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very clean crisp colour Just bought a new garden room. It was primed a cedar colour. Painted outside stone colour & inside pale jasmine. Does need 3 the coats for good finish - as advised. Love it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pale jasmine,nice colour but very watery Brought this paint for new fences being installed,the colour is lovely but after reading other views I have found that they changed the consistency of the paint (made it thinner) to accommodate there CUPRINOL fence sprayer. The fence panels have had 3 coats but after a week with THIS colour they look like they always need another coat. It worked out to 5 litres for 4 (6 foot) panels,thats slot of paint,and also it's not cheap,if it was done again I would try to source either a cheap base coat fence paint in white or just an external paint,would it be cheaper?? Who knows.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible don't buy Thin as water. After trying to paint with first time, returned it for full refund. Thin as water. Would have taken at least 6 coats to get anywhere near colour on tin. Only painting over pale wood do not a hard cover up but this paint couldn't handle that.
