How to prepare a wall for painting

How to prepare a wall for painting

While it can be tempting to get painting as soon as possible when you want to decorate a room, it’s worth taking the time to make sure your room and surfaces are best prepared before you begin. Getting the preparation right is crucial to achieving the perfect finish. It’ll also help to keep things neater and cleaner, and reduce the need for additional coats of paint. No paint can completely cover dirty or uneven surfaces, so tackling this at the start of the project avoids the need for extra work later on.

In this guide we’ll walk you through the most important steps to take, and show you how to;

  • Empty your room ready for decorating, and protect fixtures and fittings you aren't painting
  • Clean your walls to help paint adhere
  • Fill holes and cracks and smooth your walls for the best possible finish
  • Prime stained surfaces or those which have not been painted before

Once you've completed these tasks you should have a smooth, even surface ready to be painted.

If you're painting on bare wood, plaster or metal surfaces, you'll get a better result if you use a primer first. It provides a surface which the paint can bond to and stops the paint being absorbed. Find out more what you need and for what surface.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So easy to apply! I really enjoyed using it! The coverage is brilliant & it's very forgiving as I'm not the best painter in the world. The colour is gorgeous & I've got loads left so I'm looking round the garden for more things to paint.... who knew I'd be saying that!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great coverage Very pleased with this paint. I overestimated how much I'd need - I managed 2 coats of our shed and still have loads left from 2.5 l. The paint covers well and was a good consistency to use. It dried quickly - although that was one one of the few good days this summer ! I'd use it again, and definitely recommend. Being able just to wash the brush is brilliant, and the colour has been admired often.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I normally don't review ! I bought some of this paint to do my fence panels, a job I hate. I thought I would cheat and use a sprayer which was the wrong decision as the paint went everywhere barring the fence. The first tin I used was on some bare panels that had not been painted before and 2.5 litres of paint did about 2 and a bit panels. At this rate it would be cheaper to buy new panels I thought. Anyhow I got on with the job and I am so pleased that I did, as the panels now look brilliant and the kids said how clean the panels look. After painting some 16 panels with more to do I decided to paint the composite would cladding on my hot tub with a different colour Muted Clay, again from Cuprinol and wow it looks brand new again. This paint is worth the little extra you pay but be careful it sticks to everything so you may find yourself painting a lot more. For the first time ever I have enjoyed refurbishing the garden because I can see the refreshing difference the colours have made instead of the dull browns and greens of the past. As the title says, I don't do reviews but I had an invite to write this one and thought it only fare to do so. Hope it Helps a little. Wayne

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Did what it said of the tin. I bought this with the intention of tarting up my shed in the back garden. Didn't expect it to be perfect as it had been quite neglected. Wrong! It went on easy (two coats in total) and it looks really nice. I would definitely recommend this product.
