How to prepare walls for painting

How to prepare walls for painting

While it can be tempting to get painting as soon as possible when you want to decorate a room, it’s worth taking the time to make sure your room and surfaces are best prepared before you begin. Getting the preparation right is crucial to achieving the perfect finish. It’ll also help to keep things neater and cleaner, and reduce the need for additional coats of paint. No paint can completely cover dirty or uneven surfaces, so tackling this at the start of the project avoids the need for extra work later on.

In this guide we’ll walk you through the most important steps to take, and show you how to;

  • Empty your room ready for decorating, and protect fixtures and fittings you aren't painting
  • Clean your walls to help paint adhere
  • Fill holes and cracks and smooth your walls for the best possible finish
  • Prime stained surfaces or those which have not been painted before

Once you've completed these tasks you should have a smooth, even surface ready to be painted.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Decking a lot better and safer than before I bought this to do a large bit of decking at the side of my house that we use a lot as access to the garden, washing line, shed etc is over the decking. I had not treated my decking with anything for several years and some the boards had started to rot in places. I replaced some of the boards leaving me with what looked like a patchwork quilt. I wanted something to even out the look of the decking and when I saw that this was anti slip too (My decking was very slippy in the wet) I decided to give it a go. I read the instructions carefully and thoroughly cleaned my decking to remove any algae and dirt. I used a stiff brush with a soap and bleach mixture. I purchased a couple of tins of City Stone (disappointed I couldn't get one large tin) and applied it to my decking. I thought is looked more like a paint than a stain when I opened the tins and I used a roller on the end of an extension pole to apply it in March 2016. I thought it looked good but I needed 2 coats to provide an even colour to my deck. It didn't go as far as I thought it would and I had to purchase another 2 tins. My decking is about 11ft wide by 30ft long. When I finished though I thought it looked great and I still do (November 2016). The deck is not slippy at all even in the wet and the covering has held up very well in all areas apart from just at my side door onto the decking which sees a lot of use. It has worn away and it patchy but I will leave it and recover this area next year. The rest of the decking that gets occasional use is still perfect. On the down side I found this product more like paint in that it doesn't seem to soak in like I would expect a stain to. Also I think it is very expensive and has worn on the heavy use areas. Having said that it has stopped me slipping on the decking and covered the repairs very well. I fully expected to have to renew this every year but one coat will do now except the heavy use areas which I will coat twice. Overall I am very pleased. I think I'll wait until I see it on offer before I buy though.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Looked great for a few months! I used this product last summer on my decking. It required a lot of paint to get a good coverage but this would have been fine if it had lasted. I really liked the colour and got a lot of compliments on how good it looked. Part way through the winter there were noticeable patches where the paint had started to flake off and now that it is nearly spring there are quite a lot of patches. It needs a clean but if I scrub it I expect a lot more to come off. Now I am not sure what to use. Paying this much money for it to only last a maximum of 1 year is not really acceptable.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from very disappointed with product I was aware of patches peeling within a few months and this got progressively worse over the winter. The deck is now a mess and I will have to strip it all back to prepare for repainting. I do not recommend this product and will not be buying it again. It is rubbish and not fit for purpose!!

This product was so easy to use and looked fantastic however after the winter I went to clean it as it was covered in algie and it has all come off including the product it looks terrible.
