  • DeckWright Inserts don’t deteriorate with use, even in the heaviest of traffic
  • Add grip to timber decking and reduce the risk of slipping
  • Easily fit retrospectively to already laid boards or fix to brand new boards
  • Cut to length if required, using standard tools

How to build a basic, ground-level deck

How to build a basic, ground-level deck

A simple deck at ground level is a straightforward project – a perfect starting point if you're new to carpentry.

Before you start laying, check out our guide to planning your decking project. This covers everything from decking structures to board designs, and offers an essential introduction.

Read How to plan your decking

Our example is of decking that is:

  • Laid on flat, soft and level ground
  • Laid on the ground floor, not raised
  • Not joined to a building
  • Without any extra touches like a balustrade or decking lights
  • Designed with the boards in a horizontal pattern

If you plan to lay decking that's raised, adjacent to a building or wall, or would like to add a balustrade, head over to our article on laying a raised deck for more information.

Decking buying guide

Attractive and practical, decking is a great landscaping option for outdoor spaces of any size. It creates additional living space, distinguishing a special spot for socialising or relaxing. Decked areas help make the most of surfaces that are uneven or sloped so that no garden space is wasted, and work well as elevated terraces to offer garden interest at different heights.

Decking is ideal for zoning in large gardens as well as smaller spaces, such as balconies and roof terraces, where it can create the feel of an outdoor oasis in the midst of the city. Decking complements modern styles, as well as more rural or country gardens. And the natural feel of timber evokes the sensation of being waterside or by the beach - perfect for that American boardwalk look. In fact, if you have, or are looking to add, a hot tub or swimming pool to your garden, consider laying a decked border around it - we offer low-slip boards which are ideal for this very purpose.

So, whether you're tackling a small-scale decking project or something more substantial, we're here to help you find the right decking for you and your outdoor space.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stops slipping Just what I was looking for, it does just what it should do, glue a bit hard to get out also found it a lot cheaper on line.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Now i'm able to use my decking all year round After labouring trying to keep my decking in use when it's slippy and dangerous. i'm so pleased that I've found DeckWright inserts they certainly do what they promise and look aesthetically pleasing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product I bought this item this month with no hesitance as my neighbour had recommended it to me and I must say I was not disappointed. It was easy to insert and fairly priced.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Basically good - these tips might help I have just completed the fitting of 8 packs of this anti-slip material and thought it might be worth sharing some tips for potential purchasers. Basically I'm happy, but there were some issues which are worth noting and tips to pass on: 1) Get the best glue gun you can - a cheap one will not push the adhesive out of the dispenser effectively (it's quite thick and your hand will tire before you've finished a couple of strips). Don't use a cheap plastic one. 2) Use good, preferably professional-quality knee-pads - I wouldn't even attempt starting this job without them, especially if you're of more "mature" years or your knees are already a bit dodgy! 3) Work on a warm day - as the picture on the product page accidentally shows, the strips arrive slightly twisted and unless they're made more pliable you'll be trying to push one end into the channel on the decking while the other end twists out of the glue at the other end. In the end I left the strips on top of the Aga for 15 mins before using and even on a July day they still stiffened up again after about 10 mins outdoors. 4) Don't overdo the glue - a 3-4mm strip is just right. It also needs to be applied very evenly - if you get blobs then these will ooze out around the strip and it's messy stuff if you get it all over your fingers. 5) When you open each pack, sort through all the strips and try to avoid using any that kink up at the end (save these for cutting up into short lengths to finish off). The ends are the worst part to stick and in the end I used a few house bricks to hold some of the ends down until the glue had gone off. 6) Expect to have to revisit your work next day to re-stick any bits that popped out before the glue set. And maybe the day after if you've covered a large area, as you're bound to miss some. I don't want the above to sound negative, and I saved £400 by doing this job myself instead of buying the decking with the anti-slip pre-applied. B&Q also had by far the best online price. There is enough glue provided to complete each pack of strips and the finished product is very "grippy". But I can't say this was a job I'd like to repeat!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good idea, but... Good price at B&Q cheaper than on the net. Glue very thick like silicon. No warning that I needed to buy a caulk gun until open the box. Messy and tricky to fit. Looks good and works well. Given time again would buy non-slop strips to nail or screw onto timber steps.
