For many of us, the kitchen is the heart of the home – it’s the place where we cook, where we gather to eat and where we choose to entertain. Buyer's guide to cooker hoods

Buyer's guide to cooker hoods

You probably don't give your cooker hood all that much thought, but if it wasn't there, you'd be scrubbing away at ceilings and splashbacks regularly as grease from cooking builds up fast and is tough to shift. So if you're redesigning your kitchen, replacing a hood that's seen better days or installing one for the first time, make sure you get the right kind for your kitchen.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good product! I bought this last month. It fits snugly into an 'IT Kitchens' bridging unit (need to remove bottom panel of unit and reattach like a shelf about 2/3 of the way up). It looks very unobtrusive. Fan mechanism completely concealed. I used it without an external vent as I didn't want all the mess of making a hole in the wall and installing boxing. Despite what it says on previous reviews, the recirculation mode filter WAS inside already (as I found when I bought one from the website and went to fit it!) It works really well so far. Used to have smoke alarm going off whenever I grilled steak - none now - and no cooking smells either

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Unobtrusive Just installed this and it looks fantastic. Pushing/pulling the hood in/out will turn the light and the fan off or on automatically. If you want it to look like the picture showing it 'attached' to the bottom of a cupboard It has to be fitted INSIDE the cupboard to allow the door to cover the top part of the hood. Take off the base of the cupboard, measure the depth required to the telescopic bit and make a template from the top of the cooker hood of where to make screw holes in the cupboard base. Attach the cupboard base to the top of the cooker hood and add the rear spacer if used before pushing up into the cupboard itself and secure through what was the base of the cupboard. This takes a bit of precision measuring, lots of murmuring/back patting etc and a big glass of wine but it is so worth it. The instructions are a waste of time otherwise I would have given this 5 stars.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from 1 of my better ideas having to choose an extractor hood, i was delighted to discover this product that complimented my new streamline kitchen rather than "stuck out like an ugly thumb" like most. the only gripe is: no installation instructions. although it was simple to fit i am left with brackets but have no clue why they were supplied. overall good product with a wow factor...

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Neat design I bought a this hood to replace the same model installed just under 7 years ago but the motor suddenly stopped. I was pleased with the original which was installed by a contractor and fits neatly under a bridging unit and is externally vented. It looks very neat when open or closed and works effectively removing steam and odours. I managed to fit the replacement hood myself without too much difficulty and a week later it is working well. .

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not a specified I bought this to go over one of my kitchen cupboard. When I got it home, it appears it will take up the whole cupboard. There were no pictures or description that this had to happen. Returned product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from no consumable stock I had the hood fitted as part of a refurbished kitchen. Recommended by the in house adviser at B&Q I kept the wall tiles but had new floor tiles, units and built in oven and hob. On the plan the hood looked alright--neat and unobtrusive--but now for the down side--it was fitted as a recirculating device which means every few months need to replace the carbon filters. No problem I thought went to the local B&Q store--do not stock!! This hood is made exclusively for B&Q , they stock others but not for this one. Only way to buy replacements is to go online. They cost £9.99 for 2 and now for the crunch £5 postage. Which I think is extortionate. So unless to want to pay out a considerable sum per year--DO NOT BUY

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Telescopic Hood-AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE! I picked this hood because I have a small kitchen and I could squeeze a little more storage in the cupboard its housed in. It was a huge mistake since having my kitchen fitted- 1st one didn't work when fitted, 2nd one quickly broke down and now my 3rd one has broken down in the middle of a dinner party, each time I have to wait roughly 2 weeks for the new one. I will not be having another! I've only had the kitchen in since mid December, there is obviously a design or manufacturing fault. So please to prevent stress and hassle DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT
