Features and Benefits

Reasons to switch to LED;

  • LED bulbs last longer. Leave them on constantly and you should find they are still working 6 years later!
  • Full brightness instantly; you don't have to wait for it to reach full brightness unlike CFL bulbs.
  • They are more energy efficient; An incandescent light bulb loses 80 percent of its energy to heat, leaving only the last 20 percent for light.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Dimmable in the correct situation If used with the correct LED driver (in this case a Helvar LC1x30-E-DA) that supplies 12VDC, rather than 12VAC that older halogens use, you can dim these LED lamps. Make sure you know what you are doing though as the packing doesn't state is the lamp is AC or DC (which seems to be common on many LED lamps). Easy to fit and good light output generally.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great replacement for 20w halogen I have one of these fitted in place of a 20w halogen spot in a fitting which has (or originally had) five 20w halogen spots. I've only replaced one so far, and it works really well. Light colour is indistinguishable from the halogen bulb, and it's a little brighter, but there's not much in it. I suspect that I would not be able to replace all five spots without changing the transformer (see previous review) which would be difficult, but I'm going to try one or two more as the halogen bulbs fail.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Still going strong, an excellent buy at the time. I have 3 of these LEDs for nearly three years without issue. The original transformer had to go as its minimum load of 20w. So I changed electronic transformer to the 50w varilight, which is no longer sold by BandQ. When changing from 50w halogen these LEDs are noticeably less bright, but they were the most powerful Diall sold in BandQ at the time I purchased them. In fairness they only claim to be 20w replacements but I think they are closer to 35w. The initial change was soon forgotten and I am used to the lighting levels given by these. I am quite please with them and their 100% reliability so far. At my current usage I would need to wait nearly 15 more years before they get to their predicted 25000 hour lifespan. According to online saving calculators based on my usage, when including the purchase price plus the replacement cost of transformers, I've recovered all costs within the first year, just by the electricity savings alone. If I were changing from 20w halogens, rather than 50w halogens, then it would have been 4 years to break even at the prices I paid. The current cost of this LED as I write this review is less than half what I originally paid. They run cool unlike halogens. You can still safely handle them when they've been running for sometime. It is important that they are fitted in a well-ventilated fitting so they stay cool. If they are too warm to handle comfortably, then they are probably too hot.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Replaced 2x 50W Halogen and they work! I decided to take the plunge and test a pair of these. I replaced 2 of my 50w halogen bulbs in the living room which were far too bright and they work well. They put out a lot more light than I thought they would!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not overjoyed some bulbs strobe and then go out, they seem temperamental

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Check your transformers before buying I bought 9 of these bulbs to replace 50W Halogens (hoping to save in my electricity bill) and after installing I found that some of them flashed. The flashing was very quick, almost like a strobe, but there all the same. After a lot of checking (was it a dodgy bulb, was it a dodgy light switch) an electrician friend of mine told me to check the minimum rating on my transformers. Turns out the minimum power my transformer can happily put through is 20W (technically 20VA but near enough 20W), so a 4.5W bulb doesn't meet this requirement. I'm now looking at either replacing my transformers (not a simple task) or giving up on these bulbs and replacing the lights completely with mains voltage ones. Either way, the bulbs are going to end up costing me a lot more than i'll ever save on them. Not a fault of the bulb - my fault entirely, but please do check the minimum requirements on your transformers before shelling out.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor package instructions Like the other reviewers, the B&Q Diall packaging has the usual good information regarding these bulbs, but does not indicate that a change of transformer is required to use them in place of the older Halogen bulbs. Why not give this advice ?
