Questions to ask before you begin

Which room in the house are you painting?

What goes on in the room you are planning to paint? Maybe you are painting a kitchen or bathroom that would benefit from a moisture-resistant paint. Some rooms might need an extra hard-wearing paint which can be wiped down and cleaned such as hallways, landings or kid’s bedrooms. Finding the right paint isn’t just about which colour you pick. We have different types of paint designed for use in different rooms. By choosing the paint that is specially designed for the type of room you are painting, you will get the best end result.

What type of surface are you painting?

There are different types of paint for different surface materials. As well as a comprehensive selection of emulsion paints for walls and ceilings, we have a wide range of specialist paint including ones that are designed for wood furniture, brick walls, and tiles. Choosing the right paint for the right material will ensure a longer-lasting result and the best coverage.

What kind of look are you going for?

Maybe your home has quite a traditional look and would suit a subtle, matt effect paint. Or perhaps you have a more contemporary style that would look great with a satin or metallic finish paint. When selecting paint, think about what you want the final look to be, so that you can choose the correct finish as well as the right colour.

How much time do you have to complete your decorating project?

If you need to get your painting job done quickly, we have a wide range of quick-drying options that will help you get a whole room decorated in a few hours. We have quick dry wall paint, primers, and wood and metal paint to help you make the most of your time whatever you are painting.

What state is the surface in?

Some of our interior paints can be applied directly to the surface. Others may require a bit of preparation before you can begin painting. Perhaps you are painting a freshly plastered surface or previously untreated wood, or maybe you need to fill in some holes or sand down an uneven surface. We have paints and primers for all sorts of surfaces that will help you achieve a nice, even finish.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best paint ever! I'm definitely no pro painter but just recently redecorated my bathroom, this has to be the best paint I've ever used. Nice thick/creamy consistency which goes on with ease whether using a brush or roller or painting wall or ceiling it's great. My bathroom has been completely transformed and looks amazing. I used 2 coats as I was covering green walls. Even though this is "pure brilliant white" it is exceptionally white and bright and even makes the normal dulux paint look off white/yellow. I would definitely recommend and will be stocking up while it's on offer to use elsewhere in the house.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really easy to use I bought this to redecorate my bathroom. It's nice thick paint, hardly any splattering from it when using a roller. Coverage was almost as good as the Once paint.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great quality I am not keen on painting ceilings, especially as I am nearing 70 but this paint is so easy to apply. Leaving a lovely smooth finish I am completely satisfied with the application and finish.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Shake or stir preferably both. The reviewers who say this paint has poor coverage are correct if you haven't read the instructions. Stir it with a big flat piece of wood like an old 12" ruler. Get right to the bottom of the can and bring up the sediment - that's the white pigment so stir from bottom to top of the can for a couple of minutes. Alternatively ask the shop staff to put it on the automatic shaker for a minute. Once you've done that it covers really well, mostly in one coat if you're not painting a pig sty. Leave it for 36 hour for second coat and there will be no problem with second roller coat lifting the first coat. If that happens you haven't prepared the surface properly and it's a grubby greasy or soapy base you're trying to work with.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good coverage, perfect texture, economical. I bought this for my bathroom ceiling. The texture was spot on, which made it nice and easy to get it onto the ceiling without drips. One coat was enough to cover dark magnolia, and it covered a few hairline cracks and weird marks It seemed to go further than I expected, so once my other bathroom ceiling is done I'll probably have quite a bit left over to use in other parts of the house too.
