How to guides

How to hang wallpaper

How to hang wallpaper

Wallpaper adds a stunning finish to the walls of any room, whether it’s a bold, colourful patterned wallpaper or a subtle, neutral wallpaper. With wallpaper comes the flexibility of wallpapering a whole room or an individual feature wall.

Our extensive range of wallpaper offers a variety of colours, patterns and textures. Choose from styles including floral, geometric, metallic, natural and vintage. Our buyer's guide helps you choose the perfect wallpaper for your room to create the look that you’ll love.

Buyers guide to wallpaper

In this guide we’ll walk you through how to:

  • Measure and cut wallpaper to the correct lengths
  • Apply adhesive to the wallpaper
  • Hang the lengths to achieve a straight and smooth finish, on walls and around corners and stairwells
  • Tackle awkward areas like radiators, windows, light switches, plug sockets and door frames
  • Hang wallpaper to create a feature wall

For this project we’ll be using paste the paper wallpaper, which needs to have adhesive applied to the back of it before hanging. The alternatives are paste the wall paper, which means that you apply the wallpaper adhesive to the wall instead of the paper, and self-adhesive wallpaper. For pasting the wall we recommend applying the adhesive with a roller.

Buying guides

Buyer's guide to wallpapering tools

Buyer's guide to wallpapering tools

Wallpapering can sometimes be a more complex task than you might imagine, but having all the right tools will make it far simpler and the result much neater.

intro

Types of tools

Paste brush

You can use any 100mm or 125mm paintbrush to apply paste, but a paste brush has a thicker wedge of soft bristles, which makes it easier to use.

Paper-hanging scissors

These scissors have extra-long blades that make it easier to cut your wallpaper in straight lines.

Wallpaper table (pasting table)

Higher than a kitchen table and just wider than a roll of wallpaper, this lightweight folding platform is perfect for measuring, cutting and pasting paper. W-leg tables are more stable than cheaper versions, but plastic ones are the sturdiest of all - as well as being the simplest to clean and store.

Plumb line/chalk line

Want to make sure you hang your wallpaper straight? Use a plumb line (a weight on the end of a string) to get a perfectly straight vertical line. And if you need to draw a straight edge on most surfaces, snap a chalk line.

Wallpaper scorer

When you soak wallpaper to prepare it for stripping, score the surface first with a rotary scorer as it helps the water to penetrate. Then just use a scraper to lift the paper off the wall.

Paper-hanging brush

The soft bristles on this brush are designed to smooth wallpaper by squeezing out any air bubbles and excess paste. Wash the bristles in warm water when you've finished to keep it fresh and usable.

Wallpaper steamer

Steaming is the fastest way to strip wallpaper. It makes good sense to buy a steamer when you have a lot of paper to strip, or need to do the job quickly.

Seam roller

Smooth the seams between lengths of wallpaper with this tiny roller - but make sure not to use it on embossed or fragile papers.

Combination smoother/cutter

After you've smoothed your wallpaper in place, simply cut around any obstructions with the retractable snap-off blade. But don't press too hard on fragile papers, or they might tear.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stripped Wallpaper I used this wallpaper to cover one wall in a bedroom and it looks stunning. Was easy to hang and would recommend this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality wallpaper I hung this paper horizontally, which I thought was going to complicate matters but the quality of the paper made it a simple job. The paper has a good thickness to it, making it simple to butt up against paper already hung, it also helps when handling it. I would also like to point out the slight sheen and textured look (the paper itself is flat), both really add something to the look of this wallpaper.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Very disappointing We had a decorator use this wallpaper to hang horizontally on hall, stairs and landing. He found it one of the most frustrating papers to handle. As it is a very thin paper, it rips very easily, does not hold the paste well and marks very easily. Eventually he managed to achieve a good result which without close inspection looks modern and eye catching. It is certainly not worth the current price.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointed After reading the good reviews on this wallpaper I felt confident purchasing it for my feature wall in my hall, stairs and landing. However, my decorator encountered one recurring problem. When pasting the paper and folding it for hanging it left white marks on the dark stripe on the front. He had to take down 4 separate pieces because it was very obvious that these white marks weren't supposed to be there. We wasted 2 rolls and spent three times as long attempting to make sure that the paper wasn't creased at all. Difficult when you are papering a 15ft wall. It looks stunning now its up but I really wouldn't recommend this product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Awful I bought this wallpaper and hung it in my sitting room, almost impossible to work with, rips at slightest touch, marks with slightest touch of brush. A complete waste of money and very frustrating as stuck with it until work up to starting decorating again. I should of read reviews prior to buying as this paper was not cheap!!!!!!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from not worth the money.. very poor quality It took me months to look for a modern wallpaper for my stairs and hallway and thought this is what I am looking for...until we started to hang it... very very thin, poor quality and marks on pattern and not worth 20 a roll... i had to take few rolls back because during hanging it was marked and discoloured and yes from a distance it looks fab.. but on close inspection it looks cheap and almost transparent.. cant see this lasting long at all..shows every imperfection up on your wall too.... had paper for £7 a roll up for years and didnt show up any of the lumps and bumps this shows.. backing paper looks better quality... very disappointed !!!
