Drills buying guide

Drills buying guide

A power drill is an essential home improvement tool. They can bore holes, loosen or tighten screws and even chisel away materials. Combine this with the ability to use on a variety of materials, and you'll find that the right drill allows you to easily undertake multiple DIY tasks.

Our handy guide will explain everything you need to know about drills and will help you decide on the best one for you.

Man using a drill

Before you begin

What will you be using the drill for?

Do you need a drill for everyday household tasks like putting up shelves or hanging pictures? Or will it be used as part of a bigger renovation, and need to drill larger holes through bricks or masonry? Most drills have multiple functions, so even if you need a tool that could be used for both scenarios, we have one that could suit you – but knowing a bit about your plans will help narrow down the search.

Another consideration is the length of a particular task. The size and weight of a drill can affect how long you can spend working on your project – if the tool is heavy and bulky you’ll quickly tire of holding it. Make sure you pick a drill that is comfortable for you to handle and you’ll be able to keep working for longer.

Man using hammer drill

Will you need to move freely?

Some of our drill options will need to be plugged into the mains, and can therefore limit your movement. If you are going to use your drill all over your house, and even outside, you may wish to consider another option for your convenience.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Initial thoughts Looked extensively at routers twice the price to replace my previous router (cheap and nasty) This unit rugged and smooth to operate on initial trials. Would benefit from carry case, but other than that, happy with purchase. 3 Year warranty so take some reassurance in that.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great quality router at great price! Bought few days ago and already used a bit. So far so good. Very solid build quality, smooth, quiet, easy to use, all accessories, switches and dials excellent quality too. Shame no carry case, though - really, guys, just charge £99 and give us a plastic box!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very strong and adjustable easy to use Brought 2 months ago found the instructions easy to follow. The other good thing is that you can use 1\4 and 1\2 inch tool holder

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good machine, poor accessories The tool is heavy, solidly built and very sturdy. The motor is strong and it is producing good clean cuts with ease. It has a flat part on the base handy for running against a guide rail. The trigger switch is well located and easy to reach and the plunge lock is easy to flip up and secure. It has a useful micro depth adjustment and a stepped depth stop base so you can make several cuts, cutting deeper each time without having to reset the plunge level. The top of the router is flat so it stands easily upside down making cutter changes easy. It has both half and quarter inch collects which need a spanner to change. Bad points, the numbers on the depth gauge scale are difficult to read being engraved into the gauge and there is some play in the gauge so it can slip a little. It also gets caught sometimes on the stepped depth stop and doesn't wngage properly. The parallel guide that comes with it is wobbly and difficult to insert so makes it useless. The plunge action works fine but is quite stiff so I have had to lean over it to force it down. This, combined with the depth stop make setting the depth harder than it should be, but it's still doable. To switch on you have to hold a button and press the trigger which I found fatiguing after a while. Also means you can't use it in a router table. No case or bits included. Lead is a bit short too. It's also pretty loud. So, there are some design flaws but it is ploughing through wood quickly and accurately and I am able to work around its problems.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Heavy and difficult to use The tool is heavy but performs adequately. However, there is insufficient room to operate the trigger lock with the thumb and you have to reach around with the index finger to operate it which is an unnatural manoeuvre. This poor piece of design mars what could be quite a reasonable tool.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great router, but one fatal flaw I bought this router for my kitchen installation, i.e. trimming laminate, end panels, worktop, etc. It proved to be very good at the job (especially mitring worktop) and more than powerful at 2100w. The plunge mechanism is smooth. There's a handy locking button for removing the bit. It came with a 30mm bush. No case though. However I was disappointed and returned it because very soon on the wing nut to hold the depth gauge in place failed to stay in place - I think the the thread on this got stripped and this was only through manual tightening. I may have got a duff but I think it was more to poor design as the wing nut thread is very short and therefore minimal leeway for any wear and tear.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Less than 3 hours use from it, have to return it. I started to build a router table to mount this router on and about half way through, while I was routing out the MDF for the acrylic sheet to sit in and I noticed that the router had started to wobble from side to side by about 0.3mm; 20 seconds work later and it started to make a very unhappy sound. I stopped it and found that the wobble had increased to about 1.5mm! I was not willing to use it any further; given the 28k RPM speed, the thought of something coming loose in there was pretty frightening. So, back to B&Q and try to convince them to refund my £££ as my receipt has gone blank since I bought the router! Protip: scan or photograph your receipts! For those wanting to mount it into a DIY router table, 6mm thick acrylic sheet holds the weight. The good: - It's got plenty of power and its operation is smooth; it turns a 1/2" router bit with ease and the results are pretty nice. - The plunge action is smooth. - The start is quite "soft" and it spins up to the required RPM without any jerkiness. - The supplied guide is of reasonable quality, about what you'd expect for the price, except that for the price you'd not be expecting any accessories. The bad: - It's heavy; you'll build up some arm and shoulder muscle using it! - The plunge action, while smooth, also requires a reasonable amount of strength. The ugly: - It's borked after less than 3 hours use!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from You get what you pay for Bought this two days ago. Used it yesterday and during only the second cut of a kitchen worktop a plume of smoke was emitted from the vent and it stopped working. Taking it back today for a refund. I'm going to buy a proper router elsewhere.
