Drills buying guide

Drills buying guide

A power drill is an essential home improvement tool. They can bore holes, loosen or tighten screws and even chisel away materials. Combine this with the ability to use on a variety of materials, and you'll find that the right drill allows you to easily undertake multiple DIY tasks.

Our handy guide will explain everything you need to know about drills and will help you decide on the best one for you.

Man using a drill

Before you begin

What will you be using the drill for?

Do you need a drill for everyday household tasks like putting up shelves or hanging pictures? Or will it be used as part of a bigger renovation, and need to drill larger holes through bricks or masonry? Most drills have multiple functions, so even if you need a tool that could be used for both scenarios, we have one that could suit you – but knowing a bit about your plans will help narrow down the search.

Another consideration is the length of a particular task. The size and weight of a drill can affect how long you can spend working on your project – if the tool is heavy and bulky you’ll quickly tire of holding it. Make sure you pick a drill that is comfortable for you to handle and you’ll be able to keep working for longer.

Man using hammer drill

Will you need to move freely?

Some of our drill options will need to be plugged into the mains, and can therefore limit your movement. If you are going to use your drill all over your house, and even outside, you may wish to consider another option for your convenience.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product and very pleased with it. Only a recent purchase but needed to plane some internal doors and I am very pleased with the product and glad that I purchased it. Was a little surprised at the weight but once I had tested it on some spare wood I found it easy to use and I am very pleased with the end result. The planing depth adjuster starts at 0.25mm but I found you could plane off less than this. Just keep an eye on the dust bag as it fills up very quickly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Plane Simple I would class myself as an intermediate DIY'er, but have never really got on with manual planers; so after reading the positive reviews here, I decided for the price it might be the perfect tool for my current needs (trimming wood strips for 2 garden benches) Comes in a huge plastic box! Contains a detailed user manual (with a few typos and lots and lots of H&S notices!), the planer itself, a dust bag, parallel guide, spare blades and a couple of hex keys. Surprisingly, the planer wasn't all that heavy, even for my small feminine arms and hands. But it is worth reading the manual to familiarise yourself with the planer and its operation. For what I wanted I didn't need to fit the guide, but it was useful to have the option of which side of the planer to attach the dust bag. And of course the knob at the front can be turned to the required cut (but always start off small) I did a couple of practice runs on some spare timber; not too noisy at all, although despite the dust bag, it still spurted out quite a bit dust (best do this outside if possible). 10 minutes later I had completed lobbing off 4 mm of dead wood from my 6 planks, nice smooth level finish, and all slotted home perfectly into the slots of my bench. 5 minutes later the planer was dusted down and packed away. Job done! So very easy (at least for my basic jobs); very little effort required other than concentration. And definitely worth the 50 odd quid!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unsurpassable value I am a professional joiner and have a heavy Hitachi planer which is as old as the hills, I bought this for its lightness and super quality fence. It's lightness means it can be operated on its side and the shavings can be shot away from your face by the lever to direct shavings either way. It worked brilliantly on an ash wardrobe system I was installing and has since been used to shoot Oak doors in, which is when the fence was invaluable for the bevelled bottom. You can get a brilliant cut subject to setting blades correctly, with the motor it's a little underpowered but is really quite quiet! Just take it a little easier than with a heavy duty planer and it does all that can be expected. Very good value I thoroughly recommend this tool. The fence is a cast ally unit with plenty of bearing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from impressed Ok well I'm a carpenter by trade, si used all sorts over the years. I can say I'm impressed by the quality of the equipment. Doesn't struggle, great finish and so easy to use. The instructions are easy to follow. This is the 3rd bit of there equipment I've bought, and it's all good equipment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Value I bought this to replace an old B&D planner that had served me well for years.I only need it for DiY so didn't want to spend a fortune on a planer.I was tempted to by the cheaper Mac Alister planer but settled for this one and I am glad I did. This planner is brilliant it cuts though wood like butter.I wanted to plane some ends on a 3*3 fence post so I set it at 3mm and it cut it with ease.My old planner would never have been a match for this.So if you don't want to spend a fortune on a planner buy this one you won't be dissapointed.
