Before you begin

A few questions about how you’ll be using your mower can help narrow down your shopping options to find the perfect one.

How large is the lawn?

While smaller spaces are better suited to compact, lightweight mowers, larger gardens need a more durable and robust lawnmower. Greater power is needed to get around these broader lawns quickly and easily. Similarly, there are a number of innovative features that will help make even the toughest mowing job simple so look out for these.

Where will the lawnmower be stored?

Before deciding on the size of your lawnmower, think about both access and storage. Do you need to pass through gates in order to mow your back and front gardens? If so, be sure to measure these in advance of buying to avoid snapping up a model too big to fit through the doors. The same is true of where you'll be storing your lawnmower – make sure you can get it into your shed or garage, as well as having enough space to keep it out of the way.

How close is the lawn to a power source?

A power source close to your lawn gives you more options when it comes to your choice of lawnmower. However, don’t fret if your garden is very large or your lawn away from the power source – we have a wide range of mowers to suit every situation and size of garden.

Let's go through your options.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic mower Previously had an old Mountfield that was given to me but sadly broke down. Purchased this mower at the weekend and it was fabulous - so light to use with the self propelled. Large grass box too. Made ease of cutting out 90ft lawn. Would throughly recommend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great machine Purchased this last year for use at caravan I have been more than pleased even when grass is quite long. Has started first time and was very easy to assemble cutting lengths are more than adequate. Good variable speeds. Very reasonable price against products with same engine.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to set up and use. Bought this on Bank Holiday from Stockport branch after my Flymo died a death on me. I thought instructions were pretty simple. The mower is relatively light so fairly easy to manoeuvre round the garden. A job that usually takes an hour now takes 15 minutes and gives an excellent cut! I would mirror one of the other comments about the grass collector. It's a bit flimsy and you only know it's full when grass starts spilling over. But this is only a very very minor complaint. Highly recommended.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from OK for the money compared to alternatives..but.... Fairly well built and seems to be easy to start, although no obvious choke. Reasonably quiet and smooth engine for a petrol unit. The downside is that the wheels and handle are further out than the cutting diameter of the main body, so you can not cut up to a wall or edge. Lifting off the collector box is not perfect either as the cross brace for the handle is a bit too high up and gets in the way slightly. Will be interesting to see how long the wheels last too. Not as robust as my old Mounfield. Make sure you put oil in it ! Not as daft as it sounds. The instructions are not clear and there is nothing on the mower itself to suggest it needs to be filled before operating it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from sound as a pound Bought it yesterday and assembled and carried out first cut of the lawns today with good results. My previous Mountfield petrol mower lasted 16 years and finally rusted away with the engine still running but the grass cuttings coming through the holes. This Mcallister mower can be recommended. The instructions are straight forward and easy to follow and the machine works and handles beautifully. It cuts well and the height adjusters are robust and easy. Only one complaint and that is there is no inspection chamber on the grass box so you have to remove it to check if it's full, or else wait until the grass is spilling onto the lawn. It's light and easy to handle however and it started first time.
