How to understand building & planning regulations

How to understand building & planning regulations

What are planning and building controls? Why do they exist? Can you deal with them yourself or is it best to ask a specialist? As with any task, you can decide for yourself when you know exactly what's involved.

First of all, it's important to understand what planning and building regulations are. It's easy to think of them as restrictive, bureaucratic tools put in place purely to thwart your ambitions. However, they're essential safety mechanisms which have been designed to protect you, your neighbours and the local environment.

The regulatory bodies will give you permission to carry out your plans unless there are very good reasons not to - in which case they must explain their decision. And if you disagree, you have the right to appeal against it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from good glass cutter this is much better than the one I bought previously from B&Q. I do not know what make the other one was, but it was rubbish. This one is brilliant.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Garbage I bought this to make a bottle cutter. I scored a line twice around the diameter of ONE glass wine bottles and had to change the tip as it wouldnt do another. I noticed on the first and second bottle a black dust around the "carbide" tip. I suspect this is a coating and it is very poorly adhered to the roller. JUNK, keep away from these!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Do not buy This didn't work at all. It crunched it's way through the glass rather than scoring it, despite testing it on scrap pieces at various pressures. You can go through all six cutting heads without producing one single quality score line. Put simply, it's rubbish and it's now in the bin Save your £4 and put it towards a decent one.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Useless I bought this because I couldn't find my old cutter. This didn't cut the glass as it should therefore the glass broke and was useless. I eventually found my old one and cut a new piece of glass perfectly. Shouldn't have bought cheap :(

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't waste your money and time Bought this glass cutter after watching glass cutting how-to videos online. Looked pretty simple. I had (past tense) a 4mm bathroom mirror to cut as the corner had been damaged. I didn't want to buy a new mirror and after watching the videos I thought I could do it myself. After the first run the piece broke off in chunks. I thought it was a rookie mistake and hadn't applied enough pressure. Second go and I pushed all my weight on it. Same result. Third time I used a wood 'sandwich' with clamps to break the mirror in a straight line. Here's the outcome
