Before you begin

A few questions about how you’ll be using your mower can help narrow down your shopping options to find the perfect one.

How large is the lawn?

While smaller spaces are better suited to compact, lightweight mowers, larger gardens need a more durable and robust lawnmower. Greater power is needed to get around these broader lawns quickly and easily. Similarly, there are a number of innovative features that will help make even the toughest mowing job simple so look out for these.

Where will the lawnmower be stored?

Before deciding on the size of your lawnmower, think about both access and storage. Do you need to pass through gates in order to mow your back and front gardens? If so, be sure to measure these in advance of buying to avoid snapping up a model too big to fit through the doors. The same is true of where you'll be storing your lawnmower – make sure you can get it into your shed or garage, as well as having enough space to keep it out of the way.

How close is the lawn to a power source?

A power source close to your lawn gives you more options when it comes to your choice of lawnmower. However, don’t fret if your garden is very large or your lawn away from the power source – we have a wide range of mowers to suit every situation and size of garden.

Let's go through your options.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great engine, shaft driven Ok so far, excellent manual from Honda. Nothing from Mountfield, to explain what to do to set up operations.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Up and running. Further to my initial review, I fired the mower up yesterday and it fired first time, and it also fired first time thereafter on each occasion I started it....just what you would expect from a Honda engine. Operating the mower is very easy and it performs well but for the inexperienced purchaser the lack of an operating manual is a serious omission, and possibly a health hazard.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Inadequate assembly and operating instructions Herewith a couple of points to note when preparing your mower for use. Firstly, there is no mower operating manual only a manual for the Honda engine and its 9 variants. The info sheet which refers to the assembly accessories contained in the small plastic bag shows a throttle control assembly, don't waste any time looking for it as there is not one fitted. They don't spell it out but engine speed is "auto" for want of a better description. To start the mower (I am advised by Mountfield but haven't got that far yet) grip the black handle nearest to you against the main handle of the mower and pull the starter cord to fire up the engine, let go to stop etc. Again there is no warning or advice but the mower comes with a mulching plate affixed, you will see it in the grass chute if you look. To remove it, preferably before you add oil and fuel, look underneath the mower and you will see a sprung plastic clip holding it in place, just move it to release the plate. Whether you use the mulcher or not is of course a matter of personal choice. Finally there is a little black plug, item 6 on the info sheet, to fit it lift up the red cover to the grass chute and inside there is a rib of plastic, just set tleft of centre, which has a small hole to accommodate this plug. Tomorrow we fire it up!
