How to guides

How to hang wallpaper

How to hang wallpaper

Wallpaper adds a stunning finish to the walls of any room, whether it’s a bold, colourful patterned wallpaper or a subtle, neutral wallpaper. With wallpaper comes the flexibility of wallpapering a whole room or an individual feature wall.

Our extensive range of wallpaper offers a variety of colours, patterns and textures. Choose from styles including floral, geometric, metallic, natural and vintage. Our buyer's guide helps you choose the perfect wallpaper for your room to create the look that you’ll love.

Read our Buyer's guide to wallpaper

In this guide we’ll walk you through how to:

  • Measure and cut wallpaper to the correct lengths
  • Apply adhesive to the wallpaper
  • Hang the lengths to achieve a straight and smooth finish, on walls and around corners and stairwells
  • Tackle awkward areas like radiators, windows, light switches, plug sockets and door frames
  • Hang wallpaper to create a feature wall

For this project we’ll be using paste the paper wallpaper, which needs to have adhesive applied to the back of it before hanging. The alternatives are paste the wall paper, which means that you apply the wallpaper adhesive to the wall instead of the paper, and self-adhesive wallpaper. For pasting the wall we recommend applying the adhesive with a roller.

Buying guides

Wallpapering tools buying guide

Wallpapering tools buying guide

Wallpapering can sometimes be a more complex task than you might imagine, but having all the right tools will make it far simpler and the result much neater.

Types of tools

Paste brush

You can use any 100mm or 125mm paintbrush to apply paste, but a paste brush has a thicker wedge of soft bristles, which makes it easier to use.

Paper-hanging scissors

These scissors have extra-long blades that make it easier to cut your wallpaper in straight lines.

Wallpaper table (pasting table)

Higher than a kitchen table and just wider than a roll of wallpaper, this lightweight folding platform is perfect for measuring, cutting and pasting paper. W-leg tables are more stable than cheaper versions, but plastic ones are the sturdiest of all - as well as being the simplest to clean and store.

Plumb line/chalk line

Want to make sure you hang your wallpaper straight? Use a plumb line (a weight on the end of a string) to get a perfectly straight vertical line. And if you need to draw a straight edge on most surfaces, snap a chalk line.

Wallpaper scorer

When you soak wallpaper to prepare it for stripping, score the surface first with a rotary scorer as it helps the water to penetrate. Then just use a scraper to lift the paper off the wall.

Paper-hanging brush

The soft bristles on this brush are designed to smooth wallpaper by squeezing out any air bubbles and excess paste. Wash the bristles in warm water when you've finished to keep it fresh and usable.

Wallpaper steamer

Steaming is the fastest way to strip wallpaper. It makes good sense to buy a steamer when you have a lot of paper to strip, or need to do the job quickly.

Seam roller

Smooth the seams between lengths of wallpaper with this tiny roller - but make sure not to use it on embossed or fragile papers.

Combination smoother/cutter

After you've smoothed your wallpaper in place, simply cut around any obstructions with the retractable snap-off blade. But don't press too hard on fragile papers, or they might tear.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Spend the little extra and go for something else. where do i start! i would not recommend this wallpaper if your doing it yourself, infact i wouldn't recommend this wallpaper if you got a contractor in to put it up for you, its very hard, heavy paper to work with, not far off from being cardboard the air bubbles is unbelievable!!! the only good thing i can say is it does look nice, clean, fresh when its up until you see...... YES the air bubbles.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Dont Buy I have put wallpaper on walls for over 45 years and I can honestly say this is the worst nightmare of paperhanging I have ever experienced. It bubbles and does not want to stick down at the edges. Its very stiff paper to begin with but goes like wet lettuce when pasted. A nightmare! Dont Buy and save yourself a lot of grief

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very difficult to get a decent finish A number of issues with this paper - only decent thing is its relatively cheap!! Takes loads of paste as the embossed pattern on the front is mirrored by indentations on the back - so if you use "tub paste" like me, then it costs a bomb to paste it. Then the instructions (which I never normally look at) say to leave it to soak up the paste for 10 minutes. In that time it expands, and soaks in too well, so when you put it on the wall its then difficult to get to stick to the wall properly, and rucks up at the edges. I ended up pasting the wall as well along the edge of each strip. When it dries is shrinks so you get little gaps between each strip, and the edges still have raised unstuck bits where is rucked up. I ended up peeling back the edges and sticking down with border adhesive to get anything like a decent finish. Then when you paint it all rucks up again. OK I am not a professional, but have papered many rooms in many houses over the last 35 years, and never had these issues before (I had PVAd the walls before starting, and the plaster on the walls was excellent and flat). I would not use again!! The voting does not allow zero stars.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't buy! After 35 years of hanging wallpaper this is the worst paper I have ever come across. I have followed the instructions to the letter, it is stiff and unmanageable when pasting, dries out before hanging and bubbles once hung. Looks awful!!
