How to prepare walls for painting

How to prepare walls for painting

While it can be tempting to get painting as soon as possible when you want to decorate a room, it’s worth taking the time to make sure your room and surfaces are best prepared before you begin. Getting the preparation right is crucial to achieving the perfect finish. It’ll also help to keep things neater and cleaner, and reduce the need for additional coats of paint. No paint can completely cover dirty or uneven surfaces, so tackling this at the start of the project avoids the need for extra work later on.

In this guide we’ll walk you through the most important steps to take, and show you how to;

  • Empty your room ready for decorating, and protect fixtures and fittings you aren't painting
  • Clean your walls to help paint adhere
  • Fill holes and cracks and smooth your walls for the best possible finish
  • Prime stained surfaces or those which have not been painted before

Once you've completed these tasks you should have a smooth, even surface ready to be painted.

If you're painting on bare wood, plaster or metal surfaces, you'll get a better result if you use a primer first. It provides a surface which the paint can bond to and stops the paint being absorbed. Find out more what you need and for what surface.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very good product This product worked very well. I had originally treated the decking with a wood stain a year ago but i wanted to change the colour. This stripper removed the stain perfectly. I pressure washed the the decking to finish it off.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from It works, but takes more effort than suggested If you think one can is enough, buy two. If you think this can be done in half a day, double that. If you think this is light work, think again. If you don't have a pressure washer to aid you, avoid this. Once you start there is no turning back - the first coat will leave your decking looking patchy and ugly, so you need to continue with the second or third to get to bare wood. The finished result is nice, but not like 'new wood' - more like rustic pine.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Doesn't do exactly what it says on the tin... I was trying to remove over 11 years of decking treatments - many were the water-based type that act more like paint and coat the decking rather than soak into it. BTW I don't recomment those types of finish at all. This product did remove the old layers but it took approximately 3 times the amount of product recommended with a lot of scraping and rubbing. Brushing and jet-washing were ineffective and the jet-wash sprays waste all over the place which then hardens onto unprotected fencing, walls, door frames etc. You need to work a few planks at a time, don't expect to do the job in one go. We were approx a month from start to finish for 15 square metres of decking by doing about 3 planks a day in 2 hours with 3 sessions for each plank. We've used the new formula and the old - don't bother with the old stuff it's useless, make sure you get the 30min formula.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not so straight forward It takes a lot of effort to scrub all the peeling paint. Not worth it. I got fed up half way through and did not apply it all over the decking, and with enough coats of decking stain you cannot tell the difference on the area that it had been used on. My advise is to stain without stripping the old paint.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from PRODUCT NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE! OK, so if you have stain/ paint on the deck that's less than a year old maybe this does work. However, I followed the instructions fully on a large deck which had been painted approx 5 years ago. Didn't do anything other than the odd bit here and there. I have a karcher pressure washer and it still didn't budge. It doesn't do "what it says on the tin". I'm going back to B & Q with the empty tin and going to ask for my money back based on the product not being "fit for purpose".

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Absolute Rubbish! This doesn't work at all. Please don't waste your time or money.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Do not buy it! It doesn't do what it says on the tin.!! Spent 4 hours trying to strip my deck from previous stain but it just started to peel off from the edges of the pain that requires additional extreme effort to remove all small spots of paint left over. You also need way more than what it says in the instruction to achieve full removal.
