How to prepare walls for painting

How to prepare walls for painting

While it can be tempting to get painting as soon as possible when you want to decorate a room, it’s worth taking the time to make sure your room and surfaces are best prepared before you begin. Getting the preparation right is crucial to achieving the perfect finish. It’ll also help to keep things neater and cleaner, and reduce the need for additional coats of paint. No paint can completely cover dirty or uneven surfaces, so tackling this at the start of the project avoids the need for extra work later on.

In this guide we’ll walk you through the most important steps to take, and show you how to;

  • Empty your room ready for decorating, and protect fixtures and fittings you aren't painting
  • Clean your walls to help paint adhere
  • Fill holes and cracks and smooth your walls for the best possible finish
  • Prime stained surfaces or those which have not been painted before

Once you've completed these tasks you should have a smooth, even surface ready to be painted.

If you're painting on bare wood, plaster or metal surfaces, you'll get a better result if you use a primer first. It provides a surface which the paint can bond to and stops the paint being absorbed. Find out more what you need and for what surface.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from excellent value Bought this to paint our new summer house and have now given it 2 coats. The colour is just right and hopefully will not need painting again for another 2 years.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does what it says on the tin Nice finish which enhances the wood. Our wooden furniture looks like new.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy to apply, great protection I have been using this on hardwood garden furniture I bought more than 10 years ago and the furniture is as solid as when I bought it. It is very easy to apply if you do not want a super finish. It is difficult to get a good finish and there are always runs and blobs (hence 4 stars) but I don't think that matters in garden furniture where protection is the priority.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does make the wood darker! I specifically purchased this because I liked the way my teak garden furniture had "greyed" with time and I did not want to change the colour when I gave it some protection. However, be aware that this did darken and almost entirely do away with that greying once applied. Not cheap as it took 2.5 tins to give one coat to a large slatted table, 4 slatted carver chairs, one bench and a small table. So I didn't achieve the advertised coverage but that may be my fault because the wood was very dry and therefore thirsty. All of that said, it did go on easily, I managed to get even coverage, it dried nicely and I still like the effect and would probably use again as I like the natural colour of the furniture. We will see how it weathers over the summer!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from New patio set I had a new table and six chairs delivered in early June. I bought 3 cans of Ronseal Garden Furniture Protector from B & Q to treat said set and I was very satisfied with the initial results. We enjoyed many warm sunny days through June and July and everything appeared really good. After one damp August however the entire set needs sanding down and treating with a better product. The wood has faded badly and become ridden with black mould. In this instance it does the exact opposite of what it says on the tin. Please avoid this product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very poor product performance I bought a can of Ronseal garden furniture protector in the spring to treat two garden chairs which I had built during the winter. There was a lot of work in the chairs and I applied three coats carefully. The chairs looked OK during the summer but have deteriorated very badly since the weather got wet. They are now badly stained with blotchy grey mold. I sent pictures to Ronseal who insisted that I had not applied the product carefully enough to the end grain even though I thought I had applied it carefully. For me it certainly did not "do what it says on the tin"
