How to prepare walls for painting

How to prepare walls for painting

While it can be tempting to get painting as soon as possible when you want to decorate a room, it’s worth taking the time to make sure your room and surfaces are best prepared before you begin. Getting the preparation right is crucial to achieving the perfect finish. It’ll also help to keep things neater and cleaner, and reduce the need for additional coats of paint. No paint can completely cover dirty or uneven surfaces, so tackling this at the start of the project avoids the need for extra work later on.

In this guide we’ll walk you through the most important steps to take, and show you how to;

  • Empty your room ready for decorating, and protect fixtures and fittings you aren't painting
  • Clean your walls to help paint adhere
  • Fill holes and cracks and smooth your walls for the best possible finish
  • Prime stained surfaces or those which have not been painted before

Once you've completed these tasks you should have a smooth, even surface ready to be painted.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good product Ronseal fence life Used this product some years ago on a newly erected fence and it looks as good today as it did 4 years ago. I then wanted to renovate and old fence which had been lost under ivy for years, after clearing the ivy the fence looked in decent condition so I bought another Ronseal fence life found the same shade and now the old fence looks new again.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does what it says on the tin Mixed up properly this did a good job with one coat. For light coloured wood already preserved, 2 coats are better about 3 hours apart. It dries darker and less 'orange' than it looks in the tin.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Golden Brown All the panels have been painted with one coat. The effect is even in shade, although they look more golden brown than medium brown. Overall I am happy with the product and that it is water based. Will it last 5 years? Time will tell.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointing Very thin and an orangy colour.Certainly doesn't resemble medium oak,as I know it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very disappointing. I chose this paint because I wanted a good long lasting finish, after 2 coats it looked good, but then it rained several days later and all the colour has washed out of the finish, now it looks worse than it did before I started, very streaky. I will have to do the job again with another paint now. I have painted this fence several times before at this time of year with other products and never had any problems until now. I notice that it says on the tin that it should be above 10 degrees but if that is so, why did it look OK before it rained. And there is no mention of temperature on this advert for it. I have wasted my time and money.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from One coat is not enough Its like painting with water, you couldn't pay me to use this produced again.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Wouldnt buy again Thought i would put the 5 year one on this year after using the normal ronseal least year,as it wasnt much good, I did my fence back in april and had two coats and its already coming off.Dont bother.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Fence Paint Colour Having bought this product in store I had not seen the previous reviews. The colour of this paint is nowhere near Medium Oak - in fact it is more like the fencing pictured on the tin. Orange/Tan would be a better description!
