How to prepare walls for painting

How to prepare walls for painting

While it can be tempting to get painting as soon as possible when you want to decorate a room, it’s worth taking the time to make sure your room and surfaces are best prepared before you begin. Getting the preparation right is crucial to achieving the perfect finish. It’ll also help to keep things neater and cleaner, and reduce the need for additional coats of paint. No paint can completely cover dirty or uneven surfaces, so tackling this at the start of the project avoids the need for extra work later on.

In this guide we’ll walk you through the most important steps to take, and show you how to;

  • Empty your room ready for decorating, and protect fixtures and fittings you aren't painting
  • Clean your walls to help paint adhere
  • Fill holes and cracks and smooth your walls for the best possible finish
  • Prime stained surfaces or those which have not been painted before

Once you've completed these tasks you should have a smooth, even surface ready to be painted.

If you're painting on bare wood, plaster or metal surfaces, you'll get a better result if you use a primer first. It provides a surface which the paint can bond to and stops the paint being absorbed. Find out more what you need and for what surface.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from works a treat at bringing out colour in oak I bought this for worktop and also use it on unfinished oak internal doors, as i find it easier to apply than other finishes and like the effect

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ideal natural finish I have used this on my oak worktops and it works a treat. It's not as thick as Danish oil so doesn't go sticky. Needs to be applied once a week to build up.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Doesn't do what it says on the tin! This was recommended to me because it does not turn pale woods yellow, as Danish oil does. However, it does not give a good seal to the worktop. The instructions suggest 3 or 4 coats. I did 8 coats on my maple worktop and although water splashes beaded on the surface, the wood still stained very easily - tea, fruit, anything which touched the worktop stained it. I have just sanded all the stains out and will have to revert to the Danish oil to get a good seal

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor not worth the money I "sealed" my new oak worktop with this product. It discolours with every spill onto it even grout from tiling or a drop of lemon juice. Come on ronseal get your act together this product is not worthy of your name !

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Looks great until you then use the worktop I bought this a month ago. I was lucky and able to use this before i moved into the house. I treated my new prime oak worktop 4 times leaving 72 hours in between each coat. It looked fantastic. It was really easy to apply and really brought out the grain and colour of the wood. We moved into the house of Friday. Today is Monday. After less than 3 days living in the house around the worktop we already have black marks around the sink. Every cup we put down and every splash of liquid leaves a mark. DO NOT buy this stuff. I'm now going to have to sand down the worktops while we now live here and retreat them with something else. I'm planning on Yacht Varnish.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Total Rubbish As others have said, don't waste your money. I have applied 7 coats of this product to my Beech worktops. Looked good but did not stop anything from staining them, now have used Danish oil (wish I had done so in the first place)

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't Watse Your Money!!! Don't believe what it says on the tin, this is product is terrible and not fit for purpose, it takes too long to dry i.e. 24hrs between coats, to thin you will need to reapply after 4-6 weeks. Go for a Dansh oil with high Tung Oil content which will give you durable and waterproof finish that looks great. I only give this 1 star because I had to.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible Completely agree with the other reviews. Simply does not seal and leaves water staining.
