How to prepare walls for painting

How to prepare walls for painting

While it can be tempting to get painting as soon as possible when you want to decorate a room, it’s worth taking the time to make sure your room and surfaces are best prepared before you begin. Getting the preparation right is crucial to achieving the perfect finish. It’ll also help to keep things neater and cleaner, and reduce the need for additional coats of paint. No paint can completely cover dirty or uneven surfaces, so tackling this at the start of the project avoids the need for extra work later on.

In this guide we’ll walk you through the most important steps to take, and show you how to;

  • Empty your room ready for decorating, and protect fixtures and fittings you aren't painting
  • Clean your walls to help paint adhere
  • Fill holes and cracks and smooth your walls for the best possible finish
  • Prime stained surfaces or those which have not been painted before

Once you've completed these tasks you should have a smooth, even surface ready to be painted.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brilliant product I've used other decking oil because I thought this product was expensive but now realise buying cheaper is false economy; the oil went further and did exactly what it said on the can. You could visibly see the rain water sitting on top of the decking instead of soaking in. Highly recommend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Expensive but worth it Originally bought a cheaper product from another supplier but it was very thin and did not have the desired effect. Luckily I tested on one small area and was able to get a refund . As I have a lot of decking I had to take a deep breath and purchase several tins of this at £35 a go ! Well it was worth it , took 5 hours to jet wash very carefully our 5 year old deck and strip it right back , used the Ronseal Decking cleaner but if your decking is really dirty only jet wash will do the trick. First coat coverage was no where near as advertised as it just drunk up the oil but second went on in a third of the time and it nopw looks like new and is totally water and sun repellant . Its hard work and I will keep on top of this and maybe renew every 2 years , the real problem is getting 3 consecutive days in the UK with no rain , one to dry after jet wash , one for first coat which did not try completely after 6 hours , and one to finish. So the morale of the story is you get what you pay for !

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lovely finish. Great finish, a must for all painters, builders and diy alike. Excellent on new and old decking, enhances the colour of the wood while giving it a tough and waterproofing finish for all year round protection.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does exactly what it says on the tin! Like the other reviewers I have used the product for last 4/5 years. You only need to look at Saffie's photo's to see the excellent results that can be achieved with a bit of effort. Again, best to clean the deck first with a jet wash and allow to dry prior to applying the oil. You will be impressed with the results. Enjoy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Decking Oil This was a repeat purchase. I have used this oil for the past 4 years and would highly recommend it. I apply one coat every year (this is my choice and probably doesn't need it). I chose this oil as I wanted a natural wood appearance. It is easy to use and in my opinion it has helped preserve the life and improved the appearance of my decking.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ronseal Decking Oil. Neutral // Excellent I have been using this product for six years with great results. We have a large area of decking. It is hard work but worth it. Once a year I recommend the following procedure. First treat the decking with Ronseal Decking Cleaner as per the instructions. Leave to soak & then brush all over with a soft sweeping brush. Then power wash thoroughly without holding the nozzle too close to the deck.. This will remove all dirt, debris, discoloration and mould. If you oil over any dirt residue it will result in an oily but grubby darker appearance. Leave the wood to dry thoroughly. I always wait for a dry forecast for a few days. Paint the oil all over the decking. One coat on spindles and uprights, two coats on the flat floor area. I used to crawl all over it with a large brush, but found this method very time consuming and painful on the back and knees. I have puchased from B&Q a lond red handle (broom stick length) into which can be inserted their brush which can be adjusted to a comfortable angle. 140 / 150 degrees works well for me. Having poured the oil into a container I now walk over the deck brushing thoroughly into all the crevices. This is so much easier. Our deck is 6 years old and remains a lovely rich clear golden colour. The original wood effect still shines through. As the concentration has built up it seems that very little rain water is absorbed. The water "beads" on the surface. Warning - If you store the cans for any length of time eg from one season to another, I suggest turning them at regular intervals. On one occasion I purchased well in advance to take advantage of a special offer & realised that despite shaking, there was a gungy residue of the product congealed at the bottom of the tin when I had finished. Presumably, therefore I lost a necessary component of the formula.that year. Please note also that I used a brown decking stain on a different smaller area elsewhere. The colour was ok but it never had the oily healthy look. Contrary to the official advice I have cleaned it as above, attempting to remove at least some of the stain and then oiled over it. It is not brilliant but looks ok. NB Don't be tempted to use a brush that has been used for emulsion painting. The oil eventually softens the dried emulsion residue and deposits white specs over the wood! Not the desired effect!
