How to prepare a wall for painting

How to prepare a wall for painting

While it can be tempting to get painting as soon as possible when you want to decorate a room, it’s worth taking the time to make sure your room and surfaces are best prepared before you begin. Getting the preparation right is crucial to achieving the perfect finish. It’ll also help to keep things neater and cleaner, and reduce the need for additional coats of paint. No paint can completely cover dirty or uneven surfaces, so tackling this at the start of the project avoids the need for extra work later on.

In this guide we’ll walk you through the most important steps to take, and show you how to;

  • Empty your room ready for decorating, and protect fixtures and fittings you aren't painting
  • Clean your walls to help paint adhere
  • Fill holes and cracks and smooth your walls for the best possible finish
  • Prime stained surfaces or those which have not been painted before

Once you've completed these tasks you should have a smooth, even surface ready to be painted.

If you're painting on bare wood, plaster or metal surfaces, you'll get a better result if you use a primer first. It provides a surface which the paint can bond to and stops the paint being absorbed. Find out more what you need and for what surface.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Apply with mop I have applied this to my solid oak floor about 5 times now. It doesn't darken my wood. Takes much longer to dry maybe 6 hours. I do it before bed! I apply it with one of those giant flat mops after brushing it then cleaning it then mopping with meths. I sprinkle and mop. I may waste a little and you need to be careful to go back and forth over an area at a time. A lovely waterproof seal which can be a little slippy to start with. Got to get all the dirt and hair or it will be immortalised but once dry a little fine sanding and a precision brush pretty much cures it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Look;s Amazing Having just spent the best part of 2 week's preparing and sanding my old pine floorboard's in the my house i was really worried about what to seal the floor with to get the right look for my house,After much deliberation i went for Ronseal Floor Oil and after applying 3 coats with a micro fibre cloth the floor looks AMAZING.I have had no problem with this product compared to other review's and would recommend this floor oil for pine boards all day long.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great so far It's hard work sanding pine floorboards. I've used varnish before from ronseal. This oil I used this time round has given my hand sanded hallway a rich glossy look. I'm very pleased with the look so far. The oil soaks I to grain and although I haven't gone mad with the sanding it looks rich and a kinda school corridor look.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Better than expected We have a large oak floor 60ft x 18ft, this floor oil has brought out the natural beauty in the wood . Saying that no way is this a clear oil my oak floor is now several shades darker. This oil took 7 hours to dry and not the 2 hrs ronseal say on the tin, Taking everything into consideration , we are happy with the finish and would use again

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Care when using on already oiled floor I used this product to maintain an oak floor which had previously been treated with a traditional 'Danish' Oil (Woca Oil). The Ronseal product produces a sheen finish, whereas the Danish oil is a matt finish. After the first coat, the result was very patchy, with shiny areas and matt areas. A second coat improved this, and it could probably do with a third coat to achieve an overall sheen. If you have previously used Danish oil, it's probably best to use the same oil when maintaining it. The Ronseal has a big advantage in that it dries very quickly, in less than an hour, which helps a lot with a room that is in constant use - Danish oil takes at least 12 hours to dry. A couple of hints - when using as a maintenance oil, don't wait 15 minutes before wiping off the excess oil, as it says on the tin, do it straight away, as it becomes tacky very quickly. And make sure you have plenty of cloths to wipe off the excess- the cloths very quickly become saturated and don't work to remove the excess oil, which is important to achieve a smooth finish.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Remember to remove excess! Really important to remove excess after 15 mins as advised on back of tin. I didn't and have been wondering why it didn't look dry after 3 Hours. Ronseal helpline advised wiping with white Spirit which I've just done and seems to have Worked

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Product isn’t what it says on the tin. This is a varnish with a distinctive red tinge. trial is a must!!! it made our oak floors very dark red and glossy.
