How to prepare a wall for painting

How to prepare a wall for painting

While it can be tempting to get painting as soon as possible when you want to decorate a room, it’s worth taking the time to make sure your room and surfaces are best prepared before you begin. Getting the preparation right is crucial to achieving the perfect finish. It’ll also help to keep things neater and cleaner, and reduce the need for additional coats of paint. No paint can completely cover dirty or uneven surfaces, so tackling this at the start of the project avoids the need for extra work later on.

In this guide we’ll walk you through the most important steps to take, and show you how to;

  • Empty your room ready for decorating, and protect fixtures and fittings you aren't painting
  • Clean your walls to help paint adhere
  • Fill holes and cracks and smooth your walls for the best possible finish
  • Prime stained surfaces or those which have not been painted before

Once you've completed these tasks you should have a smooth, even surface ready to be painted.

If you're painting on bare wood, plaster or metal surfaces, you'll get a better result if you use a primer first. It provides a surface which the paint can bond to and stops the paint being absorbed. Find out more what you need and for what surface.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great value I bought this a couple of years ago, I liked the colour and it was easy to use so I bought it again this year. It looks like I have a new fence, a great product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ronseal Medium Oak I have always used this mixture & it works just fine. Just make sure it is stirred really well to get the best results one expects. I have no interest in gadgets to stir this mixture, I simply use a wooden square stick and agitate it properly by scraping the bottom properly. Works every time. Simples

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does what it says on the tin Wanted Dark Oak but none in stock so bought Medium Oak - looks very orange when wet but does dry brown. Did 11 (5' high) panels with 1 tub. Applied easily. Decent coverage.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Happy with product quality and looks great I really like this on my fence panels and the colour looks lovely (question of taste, though!). My only quibble is that it does NOT give me nearly the amount of coverage stated on the tin. One coat has been enough for me so far. However, it will be interesting to see how it weathers a Scottish winter!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It actually does what it says on the tin (tub) Justuseed this today and I must say it did the job! If you're applying it over a different shade of stain it MAY need more than 1 coat but for me to apply over a lighter shade it has worked well. If you're going to use a sprayer it does use more than specified but that should be assumed beforehand for obvious reasons. Would recommend this product.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from not one coat strange mixture , might one coat on new , but not on old and could not get the stuff to mix properly
Date published: 2017-08-07
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good, but definitely not "one coat" A good product that goes on easily and matches the advertised colour, but one coat is a stretch of someone's (a marketing department?) imagination and you're never going to get 12 panels painted from one tub. Two coats minimum - consider that when purchasing and you'll be fine.
