How to prepare walls for painting

How to prepare walls for painting

While it can be tempting to get painting as soon as possible when you want to decorate a room, it’s worth taking the time to make sure your room and surfaces are best prepared before you begin. Getting the preparation right is crucial to achieving the perfect finish. It’ll also help to keep things neater and cleaner, and reduce the need for additional coats of paint. No paint can completely cover dirty or uneven surfaces, so tackling this at the start of the project avoids the need for extra work later on.

In this guide we’ll walk you through the most important steps to take, and show you how to;

  • Empty your room ready for decorating, and protect fixtures and fittings you aren't painting
  • Clean your walls to help paint adhere
  • Fill holes and cracks and smooth your walls for the best possible finish
  • Prime stained surfaces or those which have not been painted before

Once you've completed these tasks you should have a smooth, even surface ready to be painted.

If you're painting on bare wood, plaster or metal surfaces, you'll get a better result if you use a primer first. It provides a surface which the paint can bond to and stops the paint being absorbed. Find out more what you need and for what surface.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from very good product First used to coat garden fence over 4 years ago and still retains good coverage and a matured dark red colour today. I stored the tubs outside over winter and used the following spring on another rough wood fence. The fence still has a good absorbed coat and colour today. Started another fence a few days ago between heavy showers. The rough timber absorbed the stain fairly quickly though on the very wet day I protected with plastic sheeting. Took a little bit longer to dry. So far despite the wet days the fence retains a good coverage and no fade or wash off in colour. An excellent product if used correctly.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does what is says on the tin This is a one-coat product so expectations should be tailored accordingly. If you could get a perfect finish with one coat for a fraction of the price of other products then there would be no need for those 'better' two-coat products. This DOES do what it says on the tin because it says that it will provide reasonable protection for a couple of years. It doesn't say that it will give a perfect finish that will last for years. Also, I read reviews that said it washed off in the rain. Again, the tin says it will do this if you apply to planed or non-absorbent surfaces. The previous reviewer points out that it is for rough sawn wood which will absorb it. This is not a paint that will lie on the surface, it is a treatment that needs to soak in so is only suitable on rough sawn wood. I also read reports that said it was 'gloopy' in consistency, and again, those people said it washed off. On the tin it says do not apply below 10C or it may wash off. I found that the product went 'gloopy' at low temperatures so this suggests that those people applied it when it was too cold. Bear in mind that even if air temperature is over 10C, if the product has been stored outside it may well remain below 10C long after the air has warmed up. Bring it indoors the night before you want to use it. If you apply it when it is all gloopy then it won't soak in. If you are short of time and need to do a quick job, then this is a great product. If you want '5 year protection' then this isn't for you. The colour is fantastic by the way - nothing like the 'wet' product in the tub. It goes on bright orange but dries to a lovely rich red brown like it shows on the outside, so don't be put off. On dry, rough sawn wood it soaks in instantly and very quickly gives you an idea of the final colour. Those who were disappointed because it washed off also complained about the colour - if the colour remains bright for more than a few minutes it's because the wood isn't absorbing the product, again probably confirming that it was either too cold, too smooth or perhaps too wet. My ratings are based on what I would reasonably expect from this product - overall 4 because despite my comments above coverage was a little uneven, though for the price an effort this was still reasonable.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from READ THIS BEFORE YOU BUY Just to clear something up. This product has some undeserved bad reviews on some sites. Some people just don't take the time to read the labels before they buy! This is for ROUGH SAWN wood (the cheap stuff). Water based paint will absorb straight into rough wood, for which this is ideal and works an absoloute treat! If you have more expensive sheds and fences with a smooth and silky finish (possibly already treated), then you need a more appropriate treatment which will be double or triple the price. I would suggest Cuprinol Garden Wood Treatment. For those of us with cheaper fences, this water-based paint is fantastic and easy to clean off hands and even clothes. See this photo of my fence treated with Ronseal. The panels are rough-sawn and the posts are much smoother. It clearly doesn't soak as well into the smooth posts, but I knew this before I started and I will apply several coats til they match.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not Bad, Could be Better I have bought this item for the last 3 years but it isn't long lasting. I find that although it looks good when it is good, it has to be done every year. There is no oil in it as it is water based so instead of the water running off the protection, it absorbs and washes off, but for the price, it goes a long way but it is very watery

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst Fence Paint I have tried! I bought this because the store not longer appeared to sell the product I required. I purchased this 'ONE COAT' up to now I have given 3 COATS and still not 100% satisfied. Nothing like as good as the previous product they use to sell. WHY ON EARTH DID YOU CHANGE?!!!!! I suppose it was cheap anyway..........
