How to guides

How to prepare walls for painting

How to prepare walls for painting

While it can be tempting to get painting as soon as possible when you want to decorate a room, it’s worth taking the time to make sure your room and surfaces are best prepared before you begin. Getting the preparation right is crucial to achieving the perfect finish. It’ll also help to keep things neater and cleaner, and reduce the need for additional coats of paint. No paint can completely cover dirty or uneven surfaces, so tackling this at the start of the project avoids the need for extra work later on.

In this guide we’ll walk you through the most important steps to take, and show you how to;

  • Empty your room ready for decorating, and protect fixtures and fittings you aren't painting
  • Clean your walls to help paint adhere
  • Fill holes and cracks and smooth your walls for the best possible finish
  • Prime stained surfaces or those which have not been painted before

Once you've completed these tasks you should have a smooth, even surface ready to be painted.

If you're painting on bare wood, plaster or metal surfaces, you'll get a better result if you use a primer first. It provides a surface which the paint can bond to and stops the paint being absorbed. Find out more what you need and for what surface.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Covered my dark blue tiles well Prepare, sugar soap, clean and dry. I had to do 3 coats. I started doing a thin coat with a brush but it left awful brush marks. I left 24 hours and went over with a thin layer using a gloss roller. I then left it another 24 hours and went over with a final roller and my dark blue tiles were looking brilliantly white. Take your time, paint in the grout, less is more!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It really works. I had some old kitchen tiles in my kitchen -a mushroomy colour. They looked so old fashioned. My daughter suggested tile paint.Feelimg doubtful - I bought pure white tile paint from Ronseal and I am so delighted with the result. I would recommend this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing solution I had peach tiles - I wanted Grey - I bought this product and was sceptical - I painted individual tiles carefully - but the end result was amazing! Saved me a fortune and I'm very impressed and would use again.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Cheaper Than New Tiles 2 coats and my tiles were changed completely. Great, cheaper alternative instead of buying new tiles.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So far so good Bought this as an alternative to re tiling the shower. Had a brief read of the instructions. (Quick glance). Gave the tiles a sanding down to break the seal on the tiles so the ron seal can stick to it. Done one coat and it went on fine. Second coat went on no problem. No peeling or bubbling. Use a foam roller to apply it. With it being in the shower i also used a waterproofing clear paint from no nonsense gave ample time to dry. Nice finish.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good if you prepare and apply well I was initially sceptical of using this product given the reviews but decided to bite the bullet and give it a go. Gave the tiles a really good clean with sugar soap and a bleach cleaner and when dry applied with brush (which Ronseal state but my wife said use gloss roller....). Anyway, the small area I did with brush ran, took an age and didn't look great, so took the wife's advice and used a gloss roller which was much better but still required two or three coats. In any case the finish looks good, no bubbling and very few runs. Maybe Ronseal should employ the Missis?.
