How to prepare a wall for painting

How to prepare a wall for painting

While it can be tempting to get painting as soon as possible when you want to decorate a room, it’s worth taking the time to make sure your room and surfaces are best prepared before you begin. Getting the preparation right is crucial to achieving the perfect finish. It’ll also help to keep things neater and cleaner, and reduce the need for additional coats of paint. No paint can completely cover dirty or uneven surfaces, so tackling this at the start of the project avoids the need for extra work later on.

In this guide we’ll walk you through the most important steps to take, and show you how to;

  • Empty your room ready for decorating, and protect fixtures and fittings you aren't painting
  • Clean your walls to help paint adhere
  • Fill holes and cracks and smooth your walls for the best possible finish
  • Prime stained surfaces or those which have not been painted before

Once you've completed these tasks you should have a smooth, even surface ready to be painted.

If you're painting on bare wood, plaster or metal surfaces, you'll get a better result if you use a primer first. It provides a surface which the paint can bond to and stops the paint being absorbed. Find out more what you need and for what surface.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does what it says on the tin! Easy to paint on with good cover. Used it for painting new windows so gave it two coats before painting with gloss

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very good primer for a nice finish I had the chance to use different primers, from the cheaper one to more expensive ones and this one is a very good quality one. De total surface you can cover with one 750ml container it depends on many things such as: type of wood, the finish of the wood, the quality of the brush and the skill of the painter. I managed to put nearly two coats on inside and outside on a chiken coop I am painting (large box 1x1x1 m dimensions) using a good brush for wood as well and leaving 1 day between coats. The consistency is creamy and needs a lot of brushing to get a good spread and level. It covers nicely the areas with high wood roughness without getting absorbed in as the paint does. Also you do really need two coats to get the an even level of white and a smooth surface. Do do not attempt to use it when outside is very cold (on the can is written not less than 10degC) as it become like a glue when cold (I opened the can when the temp was 6 degC and was not usable) Using a primer will save money on the real paint and also will give a good finish to your work , especially if do you wish a glossy finish.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good paint Good undercoat and easy to clean up afterwards. I always hope one coat is enough but it never is but thankfully I did get good coverage from this. I would buy again.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not suitable for covering knots Took 'blocks hardwood resins' to mean it would cover knots. It doesn't. Less than a week after applying two coats of this product and the knots are yellowing the paint.
