Drills buying guide

Drills buying guide

A power drill is an essential home improvement tool. They can bore holes, loosen or tighten screws and even chisel away materials. Combine this with the ability to use on a variety of materials, and you'll find that the right drill allows you to easily undertake multiple DIY tasks.

Our handy guide will explain everything you need to know about drills and will help you decide on the best one for you.

Man using a drill

Before you begin

What will you be using the drill for?

Do you need a drill for everyday household tasks like putting up shelves or hanging pictures? Or will it be used as part of a bigger renovation, and need to drill larger holes through bricks or masonry? Most drills have multiple functions, so even if you need a tool that could be used for both scenarios, we have one that could suit you – but knowing a bit about your plans will help narrow down the search.

Another consideration is the length of a particular task. The size and weight of a drill can affect how long you can spend working on your project – if the tool is heavy and bulky you’ll quickly tire of holding it. Make sure you pick a drill that is comfortable for you to handle and you’ll be able to keep working for longer.

Man using hammer drill

Will you need to move freely?

Some of our drill options will need to be plugged into the mains, and can therefore limit your movement. If you are going to use your drill all over your house, and even outside, you may wish to consider another option for your convenience.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 4th addition to my one+ collection Decided to buy the one+paint, primarily to speed up the painting of the extensive garden fencing at my house. After only a few early problems with the pump, the work was finished within the afternoon. Used up 2 batteries, so had to wait an hour to charge up. The handle was very helpful to aid spraying. No blockages at all, and cleaned up very easily. Even let my 10 year old to have a go, it was that good.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointed Quite a heavy sprayer, but good spray patterns and easy to use. Battery use age was quite high but having several one+ pieces of equipment it was no problem to cycle batteries. The particular sprayer I had leaked quite heavily at the container seal and hence I had as much on me as the fence. It was therefore returned.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from waste of time and money Like others on here I have used Ryobi products before and have never had any complaints, this however is a total waste. Set up was fairly easy, followed the instructions in the manual for checking viscosity of the paint I was using, well within the recommended count for suitable paints etc. to be used with the tool. Less than 5 minutes into the job it clogged, I cleared it then cleaned the nozzle and same again! I decided to change over to the other spray pattern nozzle and was faced with the exact same result but with the added enjoyment of having a rogue jet of paint firing off at a ridiculous angle and covering my arm and the roof of my shed with paint. Thoroughly annoyed by this point I removed the battery and the paint reservoir then used the paint reservoir and a brush to finish the job. I had bought the Ryobi drill to go along with this and so that I had a standard battery and charger to use for both tools so all in all I shelled out considerably more for these than I would have to just buy some brushes or a roller. On the plus side, the drill is pretty good for a cordless. I honestly would not recommend this tool to anyone and I would be curious as to what conditions this tool was tested in before being released to market.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Avoid! Thought his would speed up painting the fences and shed, however stopped spraying after 5 mins and squirted paint out of the side and all over me. Now it's covered in paint and I am doubtful B&Q will refund!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Do Not Buy! Bought this last year and a total waste of money. Difficult to prime, Doesn't spray well, is heavy, vibrates a lot and spare parts are not available. Buy an Earlex or Wagner sprayer.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible piece of equipment I bought two of these to do quite a big spraying job. I spent far more time unblocking and cleaning the sprayers than using them. Very poor design - the "bar" nozzles both clogged within an hour of starting to use them. The little pistons which provide the pressure wore out after around 10 litres of paint each (as opposed to the quoted 25) and you are only provided with one replacement for each - and then they are impossible to obtain either via Ryobi or B&Q - absolutely not fit for purpose. At £85 each EXCLUDING batteries (batteries are a further £50 each) these are not cheap, but they really should be withdrawn from the market.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Steer well clear! Poor design: the paint cup does't lock into place, no way of regulating the flow, spray pattern awful-akin to a shower head that need descaling, the paint goes everywhere except where you want it. I followed the paint thinning instructions in the book then started to spray. 10 seconds later the paint cup fell off and deposited 10 quids worth of paint over my boots and the floor. I ended up doing the job with a brush after a couple of hours cleaning up. Shame really because I've got lots of Ryobi tools and am generally very impressed by them, but sadly this one's a dud!
