How to guides

How to plan your concrete path, patio or driveway

How to plan your concrete path, patio or driveway

Concrete is made up of cement, aggregate (particles of stone) and sharp sand. When you mix these ingredients with water, they bind into a solid, hard material. In different proportions, they produce concrete of different strengths for different uses.

It's important to get the proportions right. If there's too much aggregate, you'll struggle to get a satisfactory finish. And too much sand will make the mix weak, so that the finished surface could be damaged by the elements.

Concrete begins to harden after about two hours, and then becomes unworkable. But it doesn't become really strong for several days, and continues to harden as long as there's some moisture in it.

Decking buying guide

Decking buying guide

Attractive and practical, decking is a great landscaping option for outdoor spaces of any size. It creates additional living space, distinguishing a special spot for socialising or relaxing. Decked areas help make the most of surfaces that are uneven or sloped so that no garden space is wasted, and work well as elevated terraces to offer garden interest at different heights.

Decking is ideal for zoning in large gardens as well as smaller spaces, such as balconies and roof terraces, where it can create the feel of an outdoor oasis in the midst of the city. Decking complements modern styles, as well as more rural or country gardens. And the natural feel of timber evokes the sensation of being waterside or by the beach - perfect for that American boardwalk look. In fact, if you have, or are looking to add, a hot tub or swimming pool to your garden, consider laying a decked border around it - we offer low-slip boards which are ideal for this very purpose.

So, whether you're tackling a small-scale decking project or something more substantial, we're here to help you find the right decking for you and your outdoor space.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from made area look good !! Just reviewed the b and q green deck screws 65mm, now time for the Scottish pebbles and cobbles from b and q, but I got the large bags 5 of them to add a natural feel to the area beached looking, anyway thanks b and q for all help to finish my deck area .

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Look great with nice colour range when wet I have been buying the small bags rather than bulk bags so the quality of the pebbles has been consistent. I agree with the comments of another reviewer regarding the quantity required. The coverage on the bag is misleading as you would generally need at least two layers of pebbles for paths or patios.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Variable quality and somewhat pricey I ordered 2 bulk bags of Scottish pebbles, one bag was filled with good pebbles, the other contained an unacceptable level of contamination (sand, quartz chips, gravel etc). Beware of the amount needed - it takes at least twice as much as you might think. The 25 kg bags on sale in store suggest each one covers half a square metre, one pebble deep. It takes at least 3 pebbles deep to give adequate cover making the job more expensive than planned.
