How to guides

How to hang wallpaper in difficult places

How to hang wallpaper in difficult places

You'll probably have started hanging your wallpaper on a straight wall without any obstacles. Sadly though, there's no way you can paper all the way around a room without meeting corners, door frames and fittings like light switches and sockets. But if you know the right techniques, you can still get a neat result and we will show you how.

Buying guides

Buyer's guide to wallpapering tools

Buyer's guide to wallpapering tools

Wallpapering can sometimes be a more complex task than you might imagine, but having all the right tools will make it far simpler and the result much neater.

Types of tools

Paste brush

You can use any 100mm or 125mm paintbrush to apply paste, but a paste brush has a thicker wedge of soft bristles, which makes it easier to use.

Paper-hanging scissors

These scissors have extra-long blades that make it easier to cut your wallpaper in straight lines.

Wallpaper table (pasting table)

Higher than a kitchen table and just wider than a roll of wallpaper, this lightweight folding platform is perfect for measuring, cutting and pasting paper. W-leg tables are more stable than cheaper versions, but plastic ones are the sturdiest of all - as well as being the simplest to clean and store.

Plumb line/chalk line

Want to make sure you hang your wallpaper straight? Use a plumb line (a weight on the end of a string) to get a perfectly straight vertical line. And if you need to draw a straight edge on most surfaces, snap a chalk line.

Wallpaper scorer

When you soak wallpaper to prepare it for stripping, score the surface first with a rotary scorer as it helps the water to penetrate. Then just use a scraper to lift the paper off the wall.

Paper-hanging brush

The soft bristles on this brush are designed to smooth wallpaper by squeezing out any air bubbles and excess paste. Wash the bristles in warm water when you've finished to keep it fresh and usable.

Wallpaper steamer

Steaming is the fastest way to strip wallpaper. It makes good sense to buy a steamer when you have a lot of paper to strip, or need to do the job quickly.

Seam roller

Smooth the seams between lengths of wallpaper with this tiny roller - but make sure not to use it on embossed or fragile papers.

Combination smoother/cutter

After you've smoothed your wallpaper in place, simply cut around any obstructions with the retractable snap-off blade. But don't press too hard on fragile papers, or they might tear.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really Nice Paper I have put this paper on a single wall in my kitchen - well my Dad did. He is a traditionalist and was not loving the paste the wall idea but we finally got the hang of it and it looks fantastic. The flock looks luxurious and it's a proper statement and looks fantastic against travertine tiles. I now have to attempt to find some upholstered furniture and curtains to compliment!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect - Looks amazing! I read all the reviews before deciding to buy and saw that most people would not have used this as a DIY project and would get a professional to put it up, I didnt have time for that so read what advise everyone put and took that. I have never hung paper before but this was SUPERB! Take your time, do a piece at a time and only paste the section of wall you are about to hang paper onto. Read the instructions, they are spot on. Use a ready mixed paste the wall adhesive like Solvite (think that is vital, its a combination of paper and paste that makes a perfect finish) and I pasted the wall with a paintbrush in sections just slightly larger than the paper width. The pattern match was perfect, the minimal amount of paste that got onto the edges of the paper wiped off ok, just take care and try not to get any on it and then you wont be disappointed. It looks totally amazing and I will never buy anything but paste the wall paper again! I am now moving onto to room number two with the next paper!! Go for it, you wont regret it, Amazing!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from expensive but worth it I read the reviews and panicked a bit but soo glad i went with my gut feeling on this. Not for the feint hearted though... Looks aaamazing on my living room double set back feature wall and well worth the price but needs more rolls that you think due to matching the patterns up, but i used the extra to cover my pelmit to draw the room in. Decorator had to put up lining paper first apparently as he wanted a "clean, flat surface" and said the previous reviews were accurate as paper runs if you get any paste on it. overall, looks fab up but i wudnt do a diy job and buy a roll more than you think, it can always go back!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Statement Kirsten Flock wallpaper, simply stunning I used this paper to do a feature wall in our bedroom, it is simply stunning. Paste the wall not the paper saves on mess and the flock design is fragile so once you have the paper in position you need to have clean hands and simply pat the paper to the wall to ensure there are no air bubbles. Any rubbing tends to smear black across the cream but this can be removed. It looks absolutely fantastic, and so simple to hang. The paper is thick so ensure you use a good quality strong paste.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Statement Kristen Flock - feature wall The paper is beautiful, a real statement , would give 5 stars ...however... I tried 2 different batches, both times the pattern ran off, not squint, but there was a tiny strip missing, so would advise to cut several strips and make sure they will match. I ended up using a marker to tidy up the bad pattern match. It's a PASTE THE WALL paper, really thick and easy to work with, didn't get any paste on the paper. I really enjoyed hanging it, it was my first effort at papering, got a plumb line (essential) and everything else listed in the instructions, had an extra set of hands to help problems at all, very very easy. No problems getting exchange/ refund for faulty paper.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from ????? Not sure on my overall thoughts on this yet. We have actually bought the black paper with black flock in this design but they don't appear to sell that one online. The paper is really beautiful and looks fantastic for a feature wall. I love the design, the colour, the look, however....... The down sides to this paper only become apparent when you open the roll and read the instructions. If you are considering doing a DIY job on this...don't. We used a professional decorator with 45 years experience who said that this is the worst paper he has ever come across. You cannot get ANYTHING on this paper so getting it on the wall without getting any of the paste on it is a bit difficult. If you do get any paste on it, the paper isn't washable so even water leaves marks. The back of the paper is white so even if you take every precaution when applying this, you still see the joints. We painted the wall black which costs more money for paint and it doesn't seem to make a difference. Overlapping the paper just makes the joints worse so unfortunately it is something that you can't avoid. You will also need ready mixed paste which again, we didn't know until we opened the paper. The stuff we had wasn't strong enough to hold the paper. Our decorator had to mix something else in with it, so I would advise getting a really strong paste. Really just wanted to share our experience as this paper is not cheap at £40 a roll
