How to understand building and planning regulations

How to understand building and planning regulations

What are planning and building controls? Why do they exist? Can you deal with them yourself or is it best to ask a specialist? As with any task, you can decide for yourself when you know exactly what's involved.

First of all, it's important to understand what planning and building regulations are. It's easy to think of them as restrictive, bureaucratic tools put in place purely to thwart your ambitions. However, they're essential safety mechanisms which have been designed to protect you, your neighbours and the local environment.

The regulatory bodies will give you permission to carry out your plans unless there are very good reasons not to - in which case they must explain their decision. And if you disagree, you have the right to appeal against it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from has been hugely useful We are delighted with this purchase which has proven to be great value . This tacker is really versatile as it staples and nails and we have used it for dozens of tasks including insulating our huge loft . We then loaned it to the neighbour and they did their loft too !!. Easy to load and get used to and good for weaklings like me as well as big guys .

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Flexible nailer/stapler From nailing fences to stapling furniture and foil insulation the Tacwise 191EL does it all well. Had one for several years and will buy another when it wears out. No problems getting nails or staples except sometimes out of stock for a day or two @ local B+Q store. Plenty of on-line suppliers though.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Started off so well but not a great product Bought this as planning on building a shed soon so thought I'd have a go on a few garden planters first. Out of the box it feels well made but immediately noticed that chord is very short; so short that can't be lifted much past chest height from the floor. I tried 20mm and 35mm brads with the former going in well but the latter producing some jamming and finally jamming to the point where the 'nail holder' got stuck (couldn't open it to refill nails). Will be returning for a different model but, on the plus side, I'm happy knowing that an electric nailers produces enough power for most DIY needs.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Tacwise 191el nailer Awful jams every third press don't bother the only way to get a decent job from a nailer is to spend quite bit more

Rated 1 out of 5 by from check inside the box before you leave the store Check inside the box I did not and when I got home i found that the soft rubber foot nails ans staples were missing and I needed to use it straight away it was just as well that i had purchased a pack of nails. Having looked on line the nail gun has a carry case mine did not.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from No staples I have had this item for a couple of years and it has worked very well for many types of work, but I can no longer get staples for it. They are not available in store, nor are they listed on the B & Q website. What a nuisance. Should I throw it away? The Stanley staples sold in-store don't appear to include an equivalent either. Don't buy it!!
