How to understand building & planning regulations

How to understand building & planning regulations

What are planning and building controls? Why do they exist? Can you deal with them yourself or is it best to ask a specialist? As with any task, you can decide for yourself when you know exactly what's involved.

First of all, it's important to understand what planning and building regulations are. It's easy to think of them as restrictive, bureaucratic tools put in place purely to thwart your ambitions. However, they're essential safety mechanisms which have been designed to protect you, your neighbours and the local environment.

The regulatory bodies will give you permission to carry out your plans unless there are very good reasons not to - in which case they must explain their decision. And if you disagree, you have the right to appeal against it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Useful gadget Very handy, especially as it saves so much stiorage space and as a bonus, fits into the car easily.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fabulous ladder I purchased this ladder because I needed to get the Christmas decorations out of the loft. When I used the ladder, it was easy to extend to the height I wanted and really good quality. The ladder is also very compact so I can store away with ease. Would highly recommend!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Harder than it looks. Sounded a really simple idea but it's quite fiddly to put up and down as each rung has to be "unlocked" on both sides and then slid up or down, and when sliding down you then have to support it so it doesn't crash down. Also, the instructions say you must extend it from the bottom up which would mean (to extend it fully) at some point you can't actually reach the rungs you want to extend next! Worth it for the space saving but might not have paid as much as I did if I had realised how fiddly it would be.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from didn't suit our needs We wanted a ladder that would access our loft and high cupboards, quite often, yet not take up space, and be handy to carry around the house. In fact this ladder was a bit heavy for that, but the main snag was I couldn't open and close it at all easily. (Nor could my man. I am a middle aged female, quite strong but not a builder!) So we returned it for a refund and now have to find another solution. Pity.
