Questions to ask before you begin

Which room in the house are you painting?

What goes on in the room you are planning to paint? Maybe you are painting a kitchen or bathroom that would benefit from a moisture-resistant paint. Some rooms might need an extra hard-wearing paint which can be wiped down and cleaned such as hallways, landings or kid’s bedrooms. Finding the right paint isn’t just about which colour you pick. We have different types of paint designed for use in different rooms. By choosing the paint that is specially designed for the type of room you are painting, you will get the best end result.

What type of surface are you painting?

There are different types of paint for different surface materials. As well as a comprehensive selection of emulsion paints for walls and ceilings, we have a wide range of specialist paint including ones that are designed for wood furniture, brick walls, and tiles. Choosing the right paint for the right material will ensure a longer-lasting result and the best coverage.

What kind of look are you going for?

Maybe your home has quite a traditional look and would suit a subtle, matt effect paint. Or perhaps you have a more contemporary style that would look great with a satin or metallic finish paint. When selecting paint, think about what you want the final look to be, so that you can choose the correct finish as well as the right colour.

How much time do you have to complete your decorating project?

If you need to get your painting job done quickly, we have a wide range of quick-drying options that will help you get a whole room decorated in a few hours. We have quick dry wall paint, primers, and wood and metal paint to help you make the most of your time whatever you are painting.

What state is the surface in?

Some of our interior paints can be applied directly to the surface. Others may require a bit of preparation before you can begin painting. Perhaps you are painting a freshly plastered surface or previously untreated wood, or maybe you need to fill in some holes or sand down an uneven surface. We have paints and primers for all sorts of surfaces that will help you achieve a nice, even finish.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Highly recommend - saves time and money I was a bit sceptical about this as other leading brands sell twice the volume for around £5 cheaper. However, I'm so glad I tried it. With the other brand of regular paint I was 5 coats on a newly plastered wall. With this it's 2. So overall I've actually saved money and most importantly time. It seems quite runny - but don't worry it has good coverage. The lid is also awful to get off (I took the first tin back) but now I have a special tool to open my tins which makes it much easier. Would be great if b&q could look at the rubbish lid, but even considering that this is a great product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Highly recommend! This paint (5L) was enough to paint a room (40 m^2) that 10L of Dulux paint (pure brilliant white emulsion silk) failed to cover. Two coats were enough to cover existing paint (mocha colour) without any undercoats. Paint was not runny and it was easy to apply without any issues. Paint odor was acceptable. Short pile rollers and brushes were used to apply paint to walls and happy with the finish. Getting rid of paint spills, splatters, and mistakes was not difficult.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Rubbish Coverage was useless, and the paint really smelt of chemicals. Stank the whole house out. B and q were good though and gave us a £25 gift voucher as they woudnt take it back as it had been opened and used. Bought Dulux instead. B and q colours range is better paint than valspar. Buy cheap, buy twice. Worst paint we have ever had.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst Paint Ever Purchased this paint a few days ago for my professional decorators to use, after 3 coats on the ceiling it still looked patchy, contacted Valspar who admitted a problem with the paint and told me to complain to B&Q who still have not replied to my complaint.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Dreadful, worst emulsion I have EVER used! Bought this emulsion for my lounge ceiling, from the outset I could see one coat would not be enough despite the 'excellent opacity' assurances. In fact it took THREE coats to get a decent standard of coverage. Aside from this the emulsion gave off a dreadful smell akin to 'sweaty feet'. I contacted Valspar about both these issues and they were extremely unhelpful, dismissive and defensive of their product. They said that I was experiencing 'bad odour syndrome' which can manifest itself when emulsioning fresh plaster without sealing it first, despite insisting I was not covering fresh plaster but a ceiling that had been input in ten years ago and had been sealed and emulsioned twice before. They spoke to me as if I had never used emulsion before and were very patronising, the fact is I have been decorating for over forty years. Because of their dreadful attitude and despite the fact Valspar do have a good range of colours, I will NEVER use their products again.
