Social responsibility

Environment

As the UK’s largest home improvement retailer, we supply a huge amount and diversity of products to millions of customers every year. By working with our suppliers we aim to understand, manage and reduce the impact that our products have on the environment.

Consequently, B&Q has a duty to ensure that the environmental impact of each product is as low as possible, whether it is made from natural resources (like the wood in our garden furniture) or based upon synthetic ingredients (like our paints). To do this, we have focussed our attention to specific areas where we feel we can reduce our impact. These are outlined below.

Environmental Policies

Supplier Environmental Performance
To continue to build active partnerships with our suppliers to develop more sustainable supply chains for all the products we sell

Timber
To ensure that all our wood and paper products come either from proven, well-managed forests or recycled material

Climate change
To reduce our contribution to climate change by reducing the energy we use to run our premises and transport fleet, and by promoting and selling products that are energy efficient both in their manufacture and use

Product disposal
To increase the amount of B&Q products that are re-used or recycled

Store waste
To reduce the amount of waste generated by our stores and other activities

Product environmental and social impact
To give our customers confidence that the environmental and social issues associated with the products they buy from us are properly managed

Chemicals
To ensure that the products we sell do not adversely affect the health of our customers, staff or that of their environment

Packaging
To minimise the amount of packaging associated with our products and, where packaging is unavoidable, to reduce the impact of its use

Transport
To reduce the transport impacts of our store operations and other activities
