Eco House

How we turned an ordinary suburban house into a One Planet Home

B&Q bought a house in Bishopstoke near Southampton and refurbished it into an EcoHouse fit for the next century.

Our suburban brick house is about 100 years old, has 3 bedrooms and is an end terrace with a tiled roof and cavity walls. It was extended in the 1980's to add a bathroom to the back of the house on the ground floor and the house has been double glazed.

We wanted to make the home a better place to live by moving the bathroom upstairs, enlarging the kitchen, replacing the steep staircase and adding smart technology that adapted to the requirements of the people living there.

Sustainability experts from the charity BioRegional helped us to plan our projec and the B&Q design team were enlisted to make the home stylish using innovative materials. Our goal was to comply with the Passivhaus standard wherever possible and the BRE Sustainable Refurbishment Code. Many of the improvements were made using materials you can already buy from a B&Q store.
