Verification Schemes

Independently checked responsibly sourced timber.

The only way to be assured that wood is legal is through a checking process, which tracks the wood from being cut through to its final destination.

  • Forest Stewardship Council® At B&Q we use a lot of wood for and in our products. 16,000 of the products you'll find on our shelves contain or are made from wood. You'll spot some of our wooden products easily (examples include flooring, decking or garden furniture), at other times the wood we use is hidden inside the products so you may not even realise it is there (examples include wallpaper).

The FSC® label provides a credible link between responsible production and consumption of forest products, enabling consumers and businesses to make purchasing decisions that benefit people and the environment as well as providing ongoing business value. FSC® is nationally represented in more than 50 countries around the world.B&Q is proud to be a founding partner of the FSC® and to have full chain of custody status.

  • Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification The programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) is an international non-profit, non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting sustainable forest management through independent third-party certification.

PEFC is the world's largest forest certification system seeking to transform the way forests are managed ensuring everyone can enjoy the environmental, social and economic benefits that forests offer.

PEFC works through the entire forest supply chain to promote good practice in the forest and to ensure that timber and non-timber forest products are produced with respect for the highest ecological, social and ethical standards.

PEFC UK's Chairman, Peter Latham says: "We urge consumers buying timber products to choose certified ones in order to recognise and support those companies with responsible sourcing policies."

B&Q is proud to be have full chain of custody status with PEFC For further information visit
  • The Forest Trust The Forest Trust (TFT) is a UK registered charity with staff drawn from forestry, wood product manufacture and retail backgrounds. TFT helps businesses establish where their wood comes from and to link them with acceptable forest sources. As a minimum first step the wood must come from legally verified forest operations.

TFT also encourage members to increase the volume of wood that they source from well managed forests and assists by improving the sustainability of management practices in the forests that produce their wood.

Chain of Custody

When a tree is harvested, both the stump and tree are given a number and this is logged as part of the forestry management certificate required by FSC® or PEFC.

When the tree arrives at the sawmill, this number is recorded and linked to the number on the mill's chain of custody certificate.

At every subsequent stage, numbers are recorded. This gives a paper trail that provides schemes like FSC® the ability to track back exactly where the wood has come from - and check that the trees were felled legally from a sustainably managed forest.

B&Q has full chain of custody with both FSC® and PEFC. Email if you'd like to know more about this process.
