Be prepared for... Ice and Snow

Ensure you're ready for anything this winter.

Although it's the fun and festive season, winter has its fair share of hazards to watch out for. Ice and snow have been the cause of some disruption over the past few years, so now is the time to make sure you're protected and prepared.

B&Q have everything you need to prepare and protect your home and garden from the cold.

Top tips on how to prepare for ice and snow

  1. Ensure you have a shovel to clear paths and driveways. Use salt or grit for traction on slippery surfaces.
  2. Check for anything in the garden likely to be at risk from cold, wind or waterlogging.
  3. Fix leaky outdoor taps to reduce risk of ice.
  4. Clear rain gutters of dead leaves and debris as blockages can lead to flooding. Secure all guttering as accumulating snow can rip drainpipes from their brackets.
  5. Trim the trees around your house which could pose a threat by falling over in a storm.
  6. Ensure you have torches or lamps and enough batteries to power them, should there be a power cut.

Whilst ice and snow aren't guaranteed every winter, drops in temperature are. With energy prices on the rise, insulation is your best bet in reducing heating costs.

According to the Energy Trust, by insulating your roof you could save up to £220 on your annual energy bills.

Five top tips to keep your home extra warm and cosy while being energy efficient this winter.

  1. Don't let the warmth out! Add a layer (270mm) of insulation to your loft and save over £100 every year (Energy Saving Trust).
  2. Fill gaps around windows and doors with sealant and invest in a draught excluder for your letterbox to stop warm air escaping.
  3. Fit a thermostat and turn down your heating by 1°C. You won't notice the difference in temperature, but you will save around £50 every year.
  4. Close your curtains at dusk to stop heat escaping through the windows.
  5. An insulating jacket for your hot water tank is cheap, easy to fit and could save you between £10 and £15 a year (Energy Saving Trust). Always choose one that's at least 75mm (3in) thick.

During a cold snap it's important to shield plants, garden furniture and bikes from frost and water damage as repeat exposure to freeze and thaw can split wood, rust metal and damage plants. At B&Q we have all the outdoor protection you need.
