Create a social space with stylish and durable decking
Attractive and practical, decking is a great landscaping option for outdoor spaces of any size.
It works well in large and medium-sized gardens, distinguishing a special spot for socialising or relaxing; as well as smaller spaces such as balconies and roof terraces, where it can create the feel of an outdoor oasis in the midst of the city. Decking complements modern styles, as well as more rural or country gardens. And the natural feel of timber evokes the sensation of being waterside or by the beach - perfect for that American boardwalk look. In fact, if you have, or are looking to add, a hot tub or swimming pool to your garden, consider laying a decked border around it - we offer low-slip boards which are ideal for this very purpose.
So whether you're tackling a small-scale decking project or something more substantial, we're here to help you find the right decking for you and your space.
Plan your deck
It's essential to do your preparation before beginning your decking project – whether you’re starting from scratch or are updating what you have currently. So check out our step-by-step guide to planning your decking, it'll steer you in the right direction before you start buying any boards and fixtures.
Types of decking
Our decking boards are available in two different materials: timber (including our anti-slip options) or composite. And, as an alternative to boards, we also stock timber deck tiles.
For the classic decking look, choose timber decking. All of our timber boards are made from softwood that is kiln-dried and pressure treated to ensure that excess moisture is removed evenly to prevent shrinking and warping. It’s then treated to protect against fungal decay and insect attack, ensuring that it will stay in good condition for longer. Our timber is treated to Use Class (UC) 3 as required for softwood decking – this means that it's suitable for use above ground and has been treated to protect from the elements.
All of our timber products meet either PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) or FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) standards. This means that the timber used has been sourced from forests that have been independently certified as being responsibly managed. For more information, visit our One Planet Home pages.
Our timber decking is available in different colours and finishes to suit your style, so if you want the look of hardwood, check out our darker brown decking. We also offer reversible boards so that you can easily switch up your decking's look with contrasting textures or trims. Opt for a fully ribbed or grooved design, or just a partially planed board.
And with a range of board lengths and widths available, there's plenty to make the most of any outdoor space. We recommend a longer and wider board to make planning and laying larger decks easier. And whether you want just one individual board or a multi-pack of five, we've got you covered.
Layered timber decking
If your decking is going to border wet areas like a hot tub or pool, or you’re simply looking to provide more grip (especially important on steps), consider one of our layered timber decking options. These are comprised of conventional timber decking and an extra surface layer. We offer two choices - Grassedeck and Walksure.
Featuring a layer of artificial grass, this is ideal if you’re looking for an option that’s soft underfoot. It’s a great way to add a touch of fresh colour to your balcony or garden, and children can happily roll around on this comfortable decking option.
Grassedeck comes with a 10 year guarantee and is available as single decking boards in-store, or as packs of five online.
Walksure decking not only offers grip, with its layer of black and red rubber, it also adds a contemporary look to your garden. With a 15 year guarantee, it's a good choice for those looking for a low maintenance and durable option.
For a long-lasting and innovative decking option, choose composite decking. Made from 95 per cent recycled materials (a combination of plastic and wood dust from re-used oak furniture), its advanced design ensures no warping, splitting, splintering, distorting or rotting over time. A strong and durable solid deck board with scratch and stain-resistant properties, composite decking never needs sanding, staining or oiling – so there won’t be any time intensive and costly maintenance work. Our composite boards are also resistant to fading in the sunlight, so they’ll look brand new for longer.
Composite decking is incredibly easy to maintain – it's easily wiped clean with soap and water – and comes with a 25 year guarantee.
Ideal for small decking areas, such as paths and balconies, deck tiles can also be used underneath plant pots in your garden or conservatory. Or why not use as a temporary flooring option? Easily pack them up and take them camping or to a festival to create a level surface for camping chairs and picnic tables.
Laid side by side, our wooden deck tiles don’t require any cutting and can just be screwed together, creating a decking option that’s extremely quick to install.
You will need
Joists and screws
Joints and screws are essential components when building a decked area. Our timber joists are all finished with precision, and are kiln dried and treated to ensure stability and durability. While our decking screws are corrosion resistant to ensure that your decking remains secure for many years.
Railings and balustrades
If your decking has a steep drop, you’ll want to add some form of railing to prevent falls. With a range of styles and finishes available, they can also add decorative interest to your deck and help frame the entertaining space in your garden.
Choose between timber rails with matching timber spindles – these are available in traditional and contemporary designs – or the more classic timber rail with a metal spindle design.
Railings are available in kit form for an easy-to-install solution, or you can buy individual parts to create your own unique look.
Decking railing kits
Choose between two types of kits: starter kits and running kits.
A starter kit includes a hand rail, a base rail, two deck posts and spindles (or balusters) and can be used on its own, or to start a longer length of railing. Additional running kits are the same (except that they feature one post rather than two) and can then be added to the starter kit to create a longer length of railing.
Creating your own look
If you’d prefer to construct your own railings, you'll need the following items to get started:
- Hand rails
- Base rails
- Spindles - available in 31mm and 42mm sizes
- Post caps or ball tops - for an attractive finish to your posts
- Balustrade screen or decking rope. Use the rope with the Capstan Heritage Deck Post which comes with pre-drilled holes for easy fitting.
If your decking area is raised, explore our range of decking steps. Available in three, four and six step options, these kits include all the fixings necessary to provide safe and easy access to your raised deck.
